- Compiles templates into Python modules and supports command-line compilation
- Generates HTML, XML, SQL, email, LaTeX, and other text output
- Includes inheritance, caching, and selective restriction of Python access
Where it doesn't

- Self-hosted deployment and community support may not suit teams seeking managed service
Our verdict on Cheetah
Cheetah is an open-source, Python-powered template engine and code-generation tool aimed primarily at web developers and applications built with Python. It compiles templates into Python modules and can generate HTML, XML, SQL, email, LaTeX, source code, and other text-based output. Templates can work with Python objects and control flow, making Cheetah suited to teams that need a single engine for varied text formats rather than a narrowly focused HTML templater.
Its breadth comes with a logic-based syntax: Python expressions and control flow can live in templates, and templates can subclass other templates to reuse or override selected sections. Caching supports template reuse, while command-line tools can compile templates and generate static HTML. Administrators can selectively restrict template access to Python, but the published feature set does not include a sandbox or automatic escaping. Teams should account for those tradeoffs when rendering untrusted input or generating HTML; projects that require escaping by default or strict isolation may prefer an engine designed around those protections.
Cheetah is self-hosted and free as open-source software, with community support. It is listed for Windows and Linux, and can be used as a standalone utility or alongside other technologies and stacks. That makes it a fit for developers comfortable integrating and operating a Python library, from solo projects through larger organizations. Choose it when Python integration, compiled templates, inheritance, and diverse output formats matter; look elsewhere if you need a hosted service, managed support, or built-in safety defaults.
