Our verdict on Chamber
Chamber is an open-source, local-first secrets manager built in Rust for developers and security-conscious users. It stores passwords, API keys, certificates, database credentials, SSH keys, environment variables, and secure notes in encrypted SQLite vaults. Binaries are documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux, while Docker images support container-based deployment. Its local storage model makes it a fit for individuals and teams that want direct control over encrypted secret vaults rather than a hosted service.
The core security and storage design is the main reason to consider Chamber. Vaults use ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption with Argon2 key derivation, and the product supports multiple independent vaults with switching and management. Scheduled backups include retention and integrity verification. Users can export data in JSON, CSV, and Chamber Backup formats, while the CLI supports adding, retrieving, generating, importing, and exporting secrets. Password generation and secret search add useful coverage for day-to-day vault administration.
Chamber also offers more than a local terminal interface: its REST API uses JWT authentication and scoped authorization, and the product includes a terminal user interface alongside CLI commands. That combination suits workflows spanning interactive administration and programmatic access. The trade-off is scope. Organizations seeking secret rotation, dynamic secrets, Kubernetes integration, CI/CD injection, or audit logs should choose a product built around those operational controls instead. Chamber is the stronger fit when encrypted local storage, backups, exports, and self-hosted access matter most.
