Our verdict on CFEngine

CFEngine is self-hosted configuration management software for DevSecOps and infrastructure teams managing servers, cloud instances, desktops, IoT devices, and mainframes. Its declarative policy language defines desired system states, while autonomous agents distribute policies, enforce compliance, and repair deviations. The product fits mature teams that want continuous configuration control, policy as code, package management, and drift correction across Linux and Windows environments.

The freemium structure gives teams two clear paths. Community Edition is open source under the GPL license and includes Linux support, configuration management, and autonomous agents. Enterprise Edition uses a commercial license and adds the Mission Portal web interface, REST APIs, compliance reports, inventory and change reporting, alerts, and dashboards. The Enterprise free offer covers up to 25 hosts, while paid Enterprise pricing is quote-based. Teams comparing options should therefore weigh the free Community Edition against the reporting, visibility, and operational features added by Enterprise.

CFEngine’s strongest differentiator is its autonomous enforcement model: policies are applied by agents on managed devices, with continuous compliance checks and correction of deviations. Software package installation, removal, version pinning, and updates extend that control beyond configuration files. The platform also supports custom alerts, triggered actions, SQL-backed reporting, and broad operating-system coverage including RHEL, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Windows Server, AIX, HP-UX, SLES, and Solaris. Choose CFEngine when autonomous desired-state enforcement and compliance visibility are priorities. Teams seeking a hosted deployment model or a simpler configuration workflow should consider alternatives.
