  • Where it wins

    • Password-protected links can have expiration and download limits.
    • Receive links support inbound uploads with file-type and upload limits.
    • Roles, OIDC provisioning, activity exports, and a REST API support team workflows.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Deployment is self-hosted, so operators manage their own infrastructure.
    • Support is through documentation.
    • The product is positioned for homelabs rather than a broad managed-service setup.

Our verdict on CasaDrop

CasaDrop is an open-source, self-hosted file-sharing application for homelabs and small teams that manage their own infrastructure. It supports sharing files, folders, and media through links or QR codes, as well as creating receive links for inbound uploads. Folder browsing, ZIP downloads, image thumbnails, and password protection cover common sharing needs; expiration and download limits add controls over how links are accessed. The intended audience is comfortable operating a self-hosted service rather than looking for a hosted file-transfer account.

Access management is a notable strength for a small deployment. CasaDrop has Admin, User, and Viewer roles, plus OIDC single sign-on and automatic user provisioning. Upload and download activity can be tracked and exported as CSV, and a REST API covers uploads, shares, receive links, users, and metrics. Optional ClamAV scanning applies to anonymous uploads. The surrounding ecosystem includes OIDC providers, Tailscale, Cloudflare Tunnel, Pangolin, reverse proxies, and Prometheus, giving infrastructure operators several ways to fit CasaDrop into an existing environment. These capabilities make it more than a link generator, particularly when a team needs visibility and controlled access.

CasaDrop runs as a Docker container or static Go binary with embedded SQLite, but deployment remains self-managed. That means infrastructure operation is part of adopting it, and support is documented through docs rather than a broader set of listed support channels. Its open-source model suits teams that prefer to run and manage their own service; the published description does not present paid tiers to compare. Choose CasaDrop if self-hosting, access controls, and an API matter more than a hosted service. Look elsewhere if you want a managed transfer product or support beyond documentation.
