Our verdict on Canonical MLOps

Canonical MLOps is an open-source platform built around Charmed Kubeflow for developing, deploying, scaling, and managing machine-learning workflows. It is aimed at data-science and machine-learning teams that need repeatable pipelines, experiment tracking, model serving, feature management, workspaces, and multi-user collaboration. The platform supports public clouds, private infrastructure, virtual machines, bare metal, and air-gapped environments, making it a fit for Kubernetes teams with varied deployment requirements.

Its pricing model is open source, and the product has a free plan. Canonical also offers optional enterprise support, with a subscription described on a per-node, per-year basis. The platform’s ecosystem includes MLflow for experiment and model lifecycle management, Seldon Core and KServe for model serving, Apache Spark, and the AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud environments. That combination gives teams room to connect established tools while keeping pipelines and deployments within a Kubernetes-native operating model.

The main advantage is breadth: Canonical combines Kubeflow pipeline orchestration, run comparison, Katib hyperparameter tuning, MLflow model registry integration, Charmed Feast feature versioning, JupyterLab and VS Code workspaces, RBAC, GPU-enabled distributed training, autoscaling, and multi-cloud deployment. That scope suits organizations standardizing several stages of the ML lifecycle in one platform. Smaller teams, teams without Kubernetes expertise, or groups seeking only experiment tracking or model serving may prefer a narrower tool. Canonical MLOps is the stronger choice when control, open-source access, and self-managed deployment matter more than a simpler operating model.
