Our verdict on Cacti
Cacti is a free, open-source network monitoring and graphing platform for teams that want to collect and visualize performance data in a self-hosted environment. Its monitoring inputs include SNMP OIDs, scripts, ICMP, TCP, and UDP, while RRDtool provides the graphing foundation. Device discovery, automated onboarding, graph trees, templates, role-based access controls, and distributed collectors support deployments from LAN-sized environments to networks containing tens of thousands of devices. It runs on Linux and Windows and is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
The platform fits organizations that already manage their own infrastructure and want detailed performance graphs rather than a fully managed monitoring service. Its ecosystem includes RRDtool, MySQL, MariaDB, Net-SNMP, Apache, and IIS. The plugin framework extends Cacti into areas such as fault management, logging, mapping, and NetFlow, while aggregate graphs combine traffic views across devices or interfaces. Email notifications can use PHP mail, Sendmail, or SMTP, and documented SMS alerting is available through plugins.
Cacti’s main strength is focused data collection and visualization: it gives network teams a structured way to gather SNMP performance data, apply reusable templates, discover devices, and distribute collection across remote sites. The trade-off is scope. Its feature set is less centered on modern alerting, topology, and broad integrations than platforms built around those workflows. Choose Cacti when free graphing, open-source control, and SNMP depth are the priority. Consider an alternative when you need a more unified topology, alerting, and integration experience without assembling capabilities through self-hosting and plugins.
