BuzzSumo combines online mention monitoring with content research for marketers, PR teams, publishers, and agencies. It tracks brand, competitor, keyword, content, journalist, and backlink mentions, while helping teams examine social engagement, discover trending content, and research journalists and influencers. Alerts arrive by real-time email or daily digest, and can also be sent to Slack. Its mix of monitoring and research suits teams that need context around coverage and content, rather than a tool focused only on social listening.

According to the vendor's pricing page, all four listed plans are billed annually and include unlimited searches. Content Creation starts at $199 per month and includes 2 monitoring alerts plus CSV, Excel, and PDF exports. PR & Comms is $299 per month with 5 alerts and Slack integration; Suite is $499 per month with 10 alerts and YouTube Analyzer; Enterprise is $999 per month with 50 alerts and annual billing only. A 30-day trial is available, and no card is required. The historical-data comparison lists 2 years for Content Creation, 3 years for PR & Comms, and 5 years for Suite and Enterprise, so teams needing longer history should compare tiers carefully.

BuzzSumo is available on the web, as a Chrome extension, and through an API, with integrations including Slack, Buffer, Zapier, IFTTT, and RSS. Its monitoring and engagement coverage should not be treated as identical: listed social networks are Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Pinterest, while web and YouTube are content sources; the product does not clearly document every social network as a mention-monitoring source. Choose it when content discovery, PR research, and mention alerts belong in one workflow. Teams seeking broad, social-network-first monitoring may want a more focused alternative.

BuzzSumo pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Tracks brand, competitor, journalist, keyword, content, and backlink mentions
    • Delivers real-time email or daily digest alerts, with Slack alerts available
    • Adds content analysis, trending feeds, journalist research, and report exports
  • Where it doesn't
    • Annual plans start at $199 per month, with no free plan
    • Content Creation includes only 2 monitoring alerts
    • Social monitoring coverage is narrower than its broader web and content research
