Our verdict on build2
build2 is an open-source, cross-platform build system and C/C++ toolchain for developers managing native projects across Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its text-based buildfiles use a mostly declarative language for dependencies, directives, variables, conditionals, loops, and pattern matching. The toolchain also includes bpkg and bdep for package and project dependency management, along with testing, installation, source-distribution generation, and configuration support for multiple compilers.
The free open-source model makes build2 a direct fit for teams that want build automation without a paid plan structure. Its native build graph represents target and prerequisite relationships explicitly, while incremental and intermediate-result caching can reduce repeated build work. C and C++ projects can use compiler and target detection with GCC, Clang, MSVC, and MinGW GCC. The surrounding ecosystem also includes package and project repositories and compatibility with Homebrew, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, RHEL, and FreeBSD ports, giving it a broad platform and packaging context for native development.
The main trade-off is that build2 emphasizes project configuration, dependency management, and local build orchestration rather than every modern pipeline capability. Dependency version constraints and package configuration negotiation are available, but dependency locking is not implemented. Remote execution is also not supported, so teams requiring distributed builds should consider another option. build2 is a strong match for C and C++ projects that value explicit build graphs, package management, testing, and multi-compiler configuration; it is less suitable for teams whose primary requirements are dependency lockfiles, remote execution, or AI-assisted build workflows.
