BorgBackup review
A technically deep command-line archiver for efficient, encrypted backup repositories.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
BorgBackup is a command-line backup archiver for Linux, macOS and related Unix-like systems, with Windows support documented through experimental Windows Subsystem for Linux. It is aimed at technical users who want direct control over backup repositories, archive retention, selective restores and storage locations. The project is free and open source under the BSD 3-Clause license, while deployment documentation covers multiple clients and centralized repository servers.
Its strongest area is backup efficiency and repository control. Content-defined chunking enables repository-wide deduplication, and users can choose lz4, zstd, zlib or lzma compression. Client-side authenticated encryption uses AES. Repositories can reside on local storage, removable media or SSH-accessible remote hosts, and FUSE mounting allows archives to be inspected through a filesystem view. Include and exclude patterns, selective extraction and special-file handling for entire disk images add control for varied backup scopes. Integrity checking and repair workflows further support archive maintenance.
BorgBackup is a strong fit when command-line administration, open-source software and technical depth matter more than a guided hosted experience. Its ecosystem includes SSH, FUSE, Ansible and Salt, but the integration set is narrower than products built around broad service ecosystems. Windows users must account for the experimental WSL route, and mobile support is not part of the product scope. Choose it for efficient, encrypted archives and centralized repository deployment; consider another backup product if you need mobile clients, a graphical workflow or a hosted service.
