Our verdict on Blokada
Blokada is an open-source privacy software suite from Blocka AB that blocks ads, trackers, and malware. It is aimed at people who want ad and tracker filtering across mobile devices, desktops, browsers, and DNS-compatible platforms without requiring root or jailbreak on Blokada 5. The product supports Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and the web. Its filtering options include custom filters and allowlists, selectable or remotely managed blocklists, host-level exceptions, activity logging, filtering, and statistics. Blokada also supports DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS.
The free tier is Blokada 5, which provides on-device ad blocking for Android, works across apps and browsers, blocks ads and trackers, and is open source. Blokada 6 is the subscription-based tier. It adds cloud-based ad blocking, remote configuration management, Private DNS, and support for multiple devices. The product also offers Blokada Plus, which provides WireGuard-based VPN functionality, while Blokada Family adds parental controls. The published plan structure therefore separates local Android filtering from cloud-managed, multi-device DNS filtering and additional privacy services.
Blokada is less suitable for users who specifically need cookie-pop-up blocking, since its DNS-based approach does not provide that function. The free Blokada 5 experience is also limited to Android, so users seeking free on-device coverage on other mobile platforms need to consider the cloud-based Blokada 6 approach. Buyers who want a browser-focused blocker with page-level controls should compare alternatives, while those who prefer local, cloud-independent filtering across every platform may also want a different product. Blokada fits best when open-source filtering, custom blocklists, remote management, and optional VPN functionality matter more than cookie-pop-up controls.
