Our verdict on bento

bento is an open-source command-line monorepo orchestrator for repositories that combine multiple programming languages and package managers. It models repositories as bentos, dishes, and tasks, then plans, builds, tests, lints, deploys, and caches work across Go, Rust, Python, Ruby, PHP, JVM, .NET, and JavaScript or TypeScript ecosystems. Windows, macOS, and Linux are supported, making it a fit for teams maintaining modern polyglot repositories across varied development environments.

Its strongest technical focus is dependency-aware execution. bento can visualize and plan task graphs across dishes, run affected tasks based on changed inputs, and use content-addressed caching locally, in CI, and remotely. Toolchain version pinning and automatic detection add consistency across supported environments. Built-in adapters cover npm, pnpm, yarn, Bun, Deno, Maven, Gradle, pip, and uv. Structured JSON reports and published schemas also suit teams that need machine-readable build and task results.

The ecosystem is oriented toward both deployment automation and coding-agent workflows. GitHub Actions integration supports CI, while deployment integrations include Railway, Vercel, Cloudflare Pages, and Cloudflare Workers. Coding-agent integrations include Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Codex CLI, OpenCode, and Zed, with MCP server support for agent clients. The hosted cache is in closed beta, and its displayed tiers are planned pricing rather than active paid plans. Choose bento when one repository spans languages, tools, deployment targets, or agent clients and dependency-aware caching matters. A narrower single-language repository may not need its full configuration and integration surface.
