  • Where it wins

    • Automatic health monitoring redirects new connections from unavailable endpoints.
    • Routing supports priority, weighted, performance, geographic, and subnet rules.
    • Works with Azure, external, and nested endpoints across hybrid deployments.
  • Where it doesn't

    • DNS-layer routing does not proxy application traffic.
    • Traffic Manager uses usage-based pricing rather than conventional plan tiers.
    • Failover depends on DNS resolution and configured health probes.

Our verdict on Azure Traffic Manager

Azure Traffic Manager is a DNS-based traffic load balancer for distributing requests among public-facing application endpoints. It is designed for globally distributed Azure applications, hybrid deployments, regional resilience, planned maintenance, and nested routing configurations. The service suits teams that need endpoint failover across Azure and external environments rather than an application-layer proxy.

Its strongest capability is the breadth of routing choices available within a profile. Priority routing supports primary and backup endpoints, while weighted routing distributes traffic across selected targets. Performance routing uses network latency, and geographic, multivalue, and subnet routing address location, endpoint availability, and network-specific requirements. Traffic Manager supports Azure, external, and nested endpoints, with HTTP, HTTPS, and TCP health probes for automatic endpoint monitoring. API access and a Terraform provider also support infrastructure and platform integration.

The main architectural boundary is that Traffic Manager operates at the DNS layer. It directs new DNS-resolved connections away from unavailable endpoints, but it does not proxy application traffic or manage an active connection after resolution. Its failover behavior therefore depends on DNS resolution and the configured health probes. Traffic Manager is a strong fit for organizations standardizing endpoint routing across Azure and multi-cloud environments, especially where nested profiles or several routing policies are required. Teams seeking application-layer traffic inspection, proxying, or connection-level control should consider an alternative built for those functions.
