Our verdict on Azure Key Vault

Azure Key Vault is a Microsoft Azure cloud service for storing and controlling access to secrets, cryptographic keys, certificates, storage account keys, passwords, API keys, connection strings, and related credentials. It is designed for organizations that want centralized policy management across applications, pipelines, and Kubernetes workloads. Access is available through the web and API, with Microsoft Entra authentication, Azure role-based access control, REST APIs, and SDKs supporting application integration.

The service has two published tiers. Standard covers secrets, certificates, storage account keys, and cryptographic keys. Premium adds HSM-protected cryptographic keys. Pricing is usage-based, so the main purchasing distinction is the protection level required for key material rather than a broad feature split across many plans. Azure Key Vault is a paid cloud service, making it a fit for teams that want managed Azure infrastructure rather than a self-hosted deployment model.

Its strongest case is ecosystem fit. Azure DevOps can access pipeline secrets and variable groups, while Azure Kubernetes Service and the Kubernetes Secrets Store CSI Driver support workload integration. Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure App Configuration, Azure Event Grid, Azure Monitor, and Azure Private Link extend the surrounding platform connections. Automated rotation workflows, lifecycle notifications, diagnostic logging, firewalls, private endpoints, and virtual network controls add operational coverage. Choose it when Azure is central to your applications and delivery processes; consider another tool if self-hosting or a platform-neutral ecosystem is the priority.
