Our verdict on Azure DNS
Azure DNS is Microsoft’s managed hosting service for public and private DNS zones. It suits organizations that want to manage DNS alongside Azure resources, including teams that need private name resolution within linked virtual networks. Public zones support DNSSEC and alias record sets for Azure resources, while both public and private zone management fits into the Azure environment.
Management options span the Azure portal, CLI, PowerShell, REST API, and SDKs, giving teams both a graphical interface and programmatic access. Azure RBAC, audit logs, and resource locking support administrative control, and zone-file import and export are available. Integrations include Azure Resource Manager, Azure virtual networks, and Azure Traffic Manager. That last service matters for buyers seeking DNS-based traffic routing or endpoint failover: those capabilities come from the separate Traffic Manager service, not Azure DNS itself.
Billing is usage-based, with charges tied to hosted zones and DNS queries, so costs depend on how the service is used rather than a fixed subscription tier. Azure DNS is a fit when public or private DNS is part of an Azure-centered stack and management through Azure tools is valuable. Teams that require DNS-native health checks, traffic steering, or secondary DNS should look at another service or plan for separate components; Azure DNS does not provide those capabilities natively.
