Our verdict on Azure Container Instances

Azure Container Instances is a serverless Azure service for running Linux or Windows containers without managing virtual machines. It is aimed at Azure teams that need to launch isolated container workloads such as burst jobs, task automation, or build jobs. Images can come from Docker Hub, Azure Container Registry, or other cloud registries. Multiple containers can share a group, including its host, network, storage, and lifecycle, which suits workloads whose components need to run together.

Its fit within Azure is a notable strength. Container groups can mount persistent Azure Files shares and run in Azure virtual networks, with managed identities available for Azure authentication and image pulls. The service also supports confidential containers in a trusted execution environment, interruptible Spot containers on unused capacity, and deployments in availability zones. For teams extending an AKS environment, container groups can integrate through virtual nodes. Related Azure services include Azure Monitor, VPN Gateway, ExpressRoute, Azure Firewall, and Azure Standard Load Balancer. This makes ACI relevant to teams already building around Azure services rather than seeking a provider-neutral container platform.

Pricing is consumption-based, billed per second according to requested vCPU and memory, rather than through fixed subscription plans. That can suit short-lived or intermittent workloads, but costs depend on the resources requested and how long groups run. The key operational limitation is that autoscaling is not available for containers or groups. ACI is therefore a reasonable choice for discrete workloads with controlled launch and completion patterns, but teams needing automatic scaling should consider another approach. Choose it for quick Azure container execution and Azure integrations; look elsewhere if autoscaling is central to the workload.
