Our verdict on Azkaban

Azkaban is an open-source distributed workflow manager for scheduling and executing batch jobs. It is designed for teams that define workflows through job property files, upload projects through a web interface, and run jobs through dedicated executors. Its fit is strongest for dependency-based batch processing, particularly where teams need scheduling, monitoring, retries, permissions, and event-driven execution in a self-hosted environment. It supports web, Windows, macOS, and Linux access, with deployment modes covering solo-server, two-server, and distributed multi-executor configurations.

Workflow control is the main strength. Teams can schedule flows with cron support, trigger workflows through Apache Kafka events, and retry failed jobs automatically. The web UI provides project management, execution control, status information, execution history, timelines, and job logs. SLA alerts can notify teams and automatically terminate flows or jobs. Authentication, authorization, and project permissions add administrative controls, while plugin-based job types and extensions allow the execution model to be expanded. Integrations with Hadoop, MySQL, Apache Kafka, and Quartz support common batch-processing environments.

Azkaban’s trade-off is its configuration-led approach. Workflow definitions use job property files rather than a visual builder, so teams looking for diagram-based design or approval steps should consider a different product. Self-hosted deployment also places responsibility for operating the server and executor setup with the adopting team. Choose Azkaban when open-source software, dependency-based batch workflows, execution visibility, retries, and Kafka event triggers are priorities. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a vendor-hosted service, visual workflow authoring, or built-in approvals.
