Our verdict on Autorel

Autorel is a command-line tool and Node.js library for automating releases from Git history. It suits solo developers and small teams that want Conventional Commit messages to drive Semantic Versioning, Git tags, GitHub releases, and optional npm publishing. The workflow can also run pre-release and deployment scripts, with the calculated version and tag passed to them as environment variables. Autorel is open source and self-hosted, so it fits teams comfortable running release automation in their own CI environment.

Its release workflow is more configurable than a simple version-bump command: CLI arguments and a YAML configuration file define behavior, scripts can run at release stages, and dry-run mode previews changes before execution. If an operation fails, Autorel can roll back release changes. GitHub Actions is the intended environment, while other CI systems and GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket repositories can use shell commands. GitHub and npm are the built-in ecosystem focus; other platforms rely on custom commands rather than built-in release support. That distinction matters for teams that want a ready-made workflow outside GitHub.

Autorel is freely usable under the MIT license, with documentation and community support rather than a commercial plan structure. Publishing is specifically oriented around npm packages, so projects targeting other registries or artifact types should look for a release tool with broader publishing support. It also requires Node.js, npm, Git, and Bash, and Windows is not officially supported. Choose Autorel when a small team wants scriptable npm releases with preview and rollback controls; choose an alternative if Windows support or built-in publishing beyond npm is essential.
