Our verdict on async-graphql

async-graphql is an open-source GraphQL server library implemented in Rust. It is aimed at developers building GraphQL APIs in Rust, with support for asynchronous execution, static and dynamic schemas, and type-safe procedural macros. The library also includes GraphiQL IDE integration, WebSocket subscriptions, multipart file uploads, query batching, custom extensions, and error extensions. Its Rust focus makes it a direct fit for teams whose services already use the language and its ecosystem.

The feature set covers several concerns that matter when moving beyond a basic GraphQL endpoint. Query complexity and depth limits provide controls for expensive requests, while Apollo persisted queries and Apollo tracing support operational patterns associated with managed GraphQL environments. Apollo Federation v2 support extends the library toward federated architectures, and WebSocket subscriptions address real-time API use cases. These capabilities give async-graphql a broad server-side scope within Rust, rather than limiting it to schema definition and request handling.

Framework fit is another important consideration. async-graphql integrates with Poem, Actix Web, Warp, Rocket, and Axum, giving Rust teams options across established web frameworks. The deployment model is self-hosted, so teams select and operate their own application environment rather than adopting a hosted GraphQL service. The category fit is therefore focused: choose async-graphql when a Rust-native GraphQL server library, framework flexibility, and advanced GraphQL features are priorities. Teams seeking support across several programming languages, or a product centered on hosted operations or client code generation, should look elsewhere.
