Asset Tracker is an open-source IT asset management application for organizations tracking hardware, software licences, consumables, accessories, and components. Its scope covers the full asset lifecycle from procurement through retirement, with check-in and check-out, reservations, QR code generation and scanning, audit history, licence seat assignment, compliance monitoring, and expiry tracking. It is suited to teams that want control over deployment and data while managing assets, users, licences, and related service processes in one web-based system.

Access control and ecosystem fit are notable strengths. Role-based access control provides 35 permissions, while Microsoft Entra ID, LDAP/Active Directory, and SAML support connect the application to established identity environments. MFA/2FA uses TOTP and backup codes. For operational workflows, Asset Tracker includes ticketing, workflow automation, maintenance scheduling, and approvals. Integrations include Slack, Microsoft Teams, Freshdesk, SCIM, email services, webhooks, Brevo, SendGrid, Mailgun, Postmark, Amazon SES, and Stripe. CSV, Excel, and PDF exports support reporting outside the application.

The main trade-off is deployment responsibility. Asset Tracker is built as a web app and can be deployed with Docker, Vercel, or another Node.js host, with PostgreSQL as its database. That model fits organizations that prefer self-hosting and can manage the application environment, but it is less suitable for buyers seeking a ready-made hosted service with packaged SaaS plans. Choose Asset Tracker when open-source control, detailed permissions, licence compliance, and broad workflow coverage matter most; choose an alternative when managed hosting is the priority.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires Docker, Vercel, or another Node.js host
    • PostgreSQL is required as the database
    • Teams seeking a managed SaaS plan will need a different deployment model
