Our verdict on Artifact Depot

Artifact Depot is an open-source artifact repository manager written in Rust for teams that want to run repository infrastructure themselves. It supports hosted repositories, pull-through caches, and proxy groups across raw files, Docker/OCI images, APT, Yum/DNF, PyPI, npm, Cargo, Helm, and Go modules. Deployments can run on a single node with embedded storage or use distributed metadata and blob storage components.

Its platform and ecosystem fit are broad for a self-hosted repository product. REST, Nexus-compatible REST, and OpenAPI interfaces support application and tooling integration, while web and API access cover administration and automation. Storage can use AWS S3, MinIO, Garage, or Ceph, with AWS DynamoDB or ScyllaDB Alternator available for distributed metadata. Prometheus metrics, OpenTelemetry export, and Grafana integration support monitoring workflows. LDAP authentication with group-to-role mapping adds a path for existing directory services.

The standout technical focus is storage and repository management efficiency. Content-addressable BLAKE3 storage provides deduplication, and repository cloning and snapshotting can avoid copying blob data. RBAC includes repository-name scope patterns, while configurable cleanup and garbage collection address artifact lifecycle management. Artifact Depot fits organizations prioritizing self-hosting, format coverage, compatibility APIs, and control over storage architecture. It is a less natural choice for teams seeking a hosted service, packaged support commitments, or a simple managed setup, because deployment and ongoing infrastructure remain part of the operating model.
