Our verdict on Apollo

Apollo is an open-source host for streaming games and desktop sessions to Artemis and compatible clients. It is aimed at users who want to manage their own streaming environment rather than use a commercial SaaS service. Host support is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the product can use hardware encoding from AMD, Intel, or Nvidia GPUs, alongside software encoding. A browser-based configuration and client-pairing interface keeps the main controls in one place.

The feature set goes beyond basic video streaming. Apollo includes a virtual display that can match a client’s requested resolution and frame rate, with support for resolutions up to 4K in the category specifications. HDR support adds another display option, while input-only mode can separate control from streamed visuals. Per-client permission management, clipboard synchronization, and client connection or disconnection commands are useful for households or setups where different clients need different access. The open-source model and free plan make Apollo suitable for users comfortable managing their own host software and client connections.

Platform fit is the main consideration. Apollo’s integrated Artemis client is currently Android-only, while other client platforms are planned. Virtual-display support is currently limited to Windows, even though the host itself supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Users who want Android-based Artemis streaming, detailed client controls, and self-hosted operation should consider Apollo. Users who need a currently documented client experience across multiple platforms, or virtual-display support on macOS or Linux, should look for an alternative with broader verified client coverage.
