Our verdict on Apache Maven

Apache Maven is an open-source build automation and project management tool primarily used for Java projects. It uses a Project Object Model (POM) to define project metadata, dependencies, plugins, build configuration, and packaging. Maven fits teams managing conventional Java applications, libraries, and multi-module projects across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its supported package formats include POM, JAR, Maven Plugin, EJB, WAR, EAR, and RAR.

Maven's main strength is the way its build model connects configuration, dependency management, and project structure. It resolves direct and transitive dependencies, mediates dependency versions, and works with local and remote artifact repositories. For multi-module work, the reactor provides build ordering across modules. Maven can also run offline through its offline CLI option, authenticate with private repositories through settings.xml, and package and publish artifacts. Git and Subversion integrations support common source-control workflows, while workspace support is included in its category specifications.

The pricing model is open source, and Maven is distributed under the Apache License 2.0 rather than through paid tiers. That makes it a fit for teams seeking a broadly available command-line build system with established POM conventions and platform coverage. The trade-off is a narrower focus: Maven is primarily designed for Java projects, and a verified dependency lockfile format is not part of the published feature set. Verified caching support is also absent from the available positioning. Choose Maven when POM-based configuration, dependency resolution, reactor ordering, offline builds, and repository publication are central requirements; consider an alternative when lockfiles or verified caching are essential.
