Our verdict on Apache Cassandra

Apache Cassandra is an open-source, distributed NoSQL database built around a partitioned wide-column storage model. It is aimed at teams managing self-hosted workloads that need high-volume reads and writes, large datasets, fault tolerance, high availability, and horizontal growth. Cassandra provides Cassandra Query Language (CQL), an SQL-like interface for data access, and supports deployment on Linux or through Docker on supported desktop operating systems. Installation packages and tarballs support self-managed deployment.

Its distributed feature set is the main reason to consider it. Cassandra can replicate data across datacenters, expose tunable consistency levels, and scale horizontally by adding nodes. Lightweight transactions add linearizable consistency for supported transactional use cases. Storage-attached and local secondary indexes extend data-access options, while snapshots and incremental backups support data protection. Audit logging and query-log tooling add operational visibility for teams that need to examine database activity.

Cassandra is a strong fit when the operating model calls for self-hosted infrastructure and the application aligns with a wide-column design, CQL, tunable consistency, and multi-datacenter replication. Its open-source model and broad platform coverage suit organizations that want control over deployment. The trade-off is operational ownership: teams must manage installation, infrastructure, scaling, backups, logging, and reliability within their own environment. Organizations seeking a vendor-hosted database service, or applications that do not fit a partitioned wide-column model and CQL-based access, should choose a different database approach.
