Our verdict on Apache Calcite

Apache Calcite is an embeddable, open-source framework for developers building database, query-engine, and data-virtualization systems. It handles SQL parsing, validation, relational algebra, cost-based query optimization, JDBC connectivity, and adapters for multiple data sources. Rather than owning the underlying data, Calcite mediates between applications and storage or processing engines, presenting sources as schemas and tables. It is best suited to teams creating a federation engine or integrating query capabilities into another system.

The pricing model is straightforward: Apache Calcite is free and open source, with no paid plan structure described. Its main technical value is the planner. Cost-based relational optimization, query pushdown, and materialized-view registration and rewriting give developers mechanisms to improve how federated queries are executed. Local and remote JDBC drivers are available, while Avatica supports JSON or Protocol Buffers over HTTP. The optional calcite-server component adds DDL, views, foreign schemas, and materialized views. These capabilities provide building blocks rather than a finished interface for business users.

Calcite fits ecosystems that need broad connectivity, including JDBC, Apache Cassandra, Apache Kafka, Apache Druid, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis, Apache Spark, Apache Solr, Apache Splunk, Apache Geode, and Apache Arrow. Its published platform coverage centers on API access and self-hosting, so deployment, operations, and product-level experiences remain the implementer's responsibility. Teams seeking control over query planning and source integration should consider it; organizations looking for a hosted federation service, built-in cloud deployment, or a turnkey user experience should choose a different type of product.
