Our verdict on Anvil

Anvil is a browser-based Python development environment for building full-stack web applications. It combines a drag-and-drop UI designer with client-side and server-side Python, built-in PostgreSQL-backed data tables, APIs, authentication, email, scheduled tasks, and deployment options. It is aimed at individual developers, data scientists, educators, teams, and enterprise users who want to build applications for web, iOS, and Android rather than work only in a desktop coding environment.

The freemium structure gives developers a practical starting point: the Free plan includes unlimited apps, cloud hosting, library installation, and AI in the IDE. Paid plans add progressively more operational and team-oriented capabilities. Hobby adds scheduled tasks, one custom domain, and removes the Anvil banner. Business adds collaboration, SSO in apps, staging environments, and community support. Production adds private support, reserved resources, unlimited extra compute, and SQL access to Data Tables, while Enterprise adds private deployment, corporate authentication, and fully isolated environments. The published starting price is 12, and the Production plan is presented with a composite price structure.

Anvil’s main strength is breadth. The same environment covers interface design, Python execution on both client and server, interactive debugging, REPL consoles, package installation, Git workflows, GitHub synchronization, HTTP APIs, data storage, and deployment. Developers can also connect local Python code through Uplink or self-host with the open-source Anvil App Server. That scope makes it a strong choice for application builders who value an integrated workflow. It is less suitable for someone seeking a narrowly focused, conventional standalone Python IDE. Choose Anvil for browser-based application development and deployment; choose another tool when desktop-first Python editing is the primary requirement.
