Our verdict on Amazon OpenSearch Ingestion
Amazon OpenSearch Ingestion is a fully managed, serverless data collector for teams routing real-time logs, metrics, and traces into Amazon OpenSearch Service domains or OpenSearch Serverless collections. It uses Data Prepper-based pipelines with sources, processors, routes, and sinks, allowing telemetry to be filtered, transformed, enriched, normalized, aggregated, and delivered without managing ingestion clusters. Its strongest fit is with AWS users already working across OpenSearch and related AWS services.
The pipeline supports HTTP, Kafka, Kinesis, OpenTelemetry, S3, and OpenSearch sources, with integrations for Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka, and the OpenTelemetry Collector. Pipeline chaining through sub-pipelines supports more structured processing flows, while conditional routing can send data to different sinks. Automatic scaling applies to serverless pipelines, and users can configure minimum and maximum ingestion capacity. This makes the product suited to telemetry workflows that need processing and routing before delivery, rather than simple collection alone.
Pricing is usage-based on allocated Ingestion OCUs, with regional rates and configurable capacity. The product has no free plan, so it is better suited to organizations planning for paid AWS usage than to teams evaluating a no-cost telemetry pipeline. Choose it when direct alignment with Amazon OpenSearch, OpenSearch Serverless, and AWS-native streaming services matters. Teams seeking a broader integration ecosystem outside AWS, or a free starting tier, should consider another product category option instead.
