Our verdict on Alerta

Alerta brings alerts from multiple monitoring sources into a central interface, with a RESTful JSON API, web console, and command-line client. It is aimed at teams that operate their own monitoring infrastructure and want control over how alerts are consolidated and handled. Its open-source, self-hosted model suits teams prepared to manage deployment and configuration rather than adopt a hosted alert service.

Alert handling is its main strength. Alerta deduplicates using environment, resource, event, and severity, and can correlate alerts across severity or related events. Blackout periods suppress matching alerts, while pre-receive and post-receive plugin hooks enable enrichment and transformation. Configurable rules route alerts to selected plugins. The web console offers filtering, search, alert actions, and history. Integrations include Prometheus, Grafana, PagerDuty, Nagios, Zabbix, Sensu, Slack, AWS SNS, AMQP, and Twilio, which gives teams options across monitoring, messaging, incident management, and notifications.

The trade-off is operational ownership: deployment can use Python, Docker, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB, and teams must manage their own environment. Alert volume and retention depend on deployment configuration, with history-entry and timeout settings rather than a fixed allowance or period. Role-based access control and API-key access controls provide access-management options. Alerta fits teams that want an adaptable, self-hosted alert pipeline and can maintain it; teams seeking a managed service or fixed hosted allowances should look elsewhere.
