Our verdict on Akvorado

Akvorado is an open-source network-flow collection and analysis system for network operators managing self-hosted infrastructure. It receives NetFlow, IPFIX, and sFlow telemetry, then presents the resulting data in a web console for flow exploration, conversation analysis, bandwidth monitoring, and traffic investigation. The product fits teams that want control over deployment and data handling while avoiding commercial licensing fees. It runs across web and Linux environments and is distributed under the AGPLv3 license.

Its standout capability is the combination of enrichment and visual analysis. Akvorado can add SNMP interface metadata and geographic information from IPinfo or MaxMind databases, helping operators interpret flows in context. The console supports filtering by addresses, ports, protocols, AS numbers, and interface attributes. Time-series graphs and Sankey visualizations provide different ways to examine traffic patterns, while optional BGP route enrichment through BMP adds routing context. These features make it suited to teams that need more than raw flow records.

The main trade-off is operational scope. Akvorado exports flow data to ClickHouse through Kafka, so teams must deploy and operate those self-hosted components alongside the collector and console. Its ecosystem includes Kafka, ClickHouse, SNMP, IPinfo, MaxMind, Grafana, and BMP, giving it useful integration points but also creating a broader infrastructure footprint. Choose Akvorado if open-source ownership, on-premises deployment, and visual flow exploration are priorities. Consider an alternative if you want a managed service or a simpler installation with fewer supporting components.
