Our verdict on Agar GUI
Agar GUI is an open-source toolkit for building portable desktop applications in C. Its core and GUI libraries combine standard interface widgets with platform services, an object system and event handling. The project supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and its audience is developers who want a native desktop GUI toolkit rather than a mobile framework or a managed application builder. It is suited to solo developers and small or mid-market teams comfortable working with C and source distributions.
Agar’s breadth extends beyond its standard widgets. Developers can register classes to extend widgets, use the style engine to customize appearance, and draw on virtual functions and timers in the core object and event system. The library also includes filesystem, kernel-event, timer and thread interfaces, plus math and linear-algebra functionality with related widgets. OpenGL- and SDL-based GUI drivers add options for applications using those graphics environments. A 3D scene-graph engine is also part of the project, though it is described as beta; teams relying on a mature 3D stack should account for that distinction.
The source distribution is free, including for commercial applications, and the project also describes a separate commercial support service. Support channels include email, chat and community. Agar is self-hosted, so it fits teams that want to build and distribute their own desktop software rather than use a hosted application service. Its C focus and lack of mobile targets make it a narrower fit for cross-platform desktop development than for teams seeking a mobile toolkit or a framework centered on another language. Choose Agar for a C-based desktop GUI with extensible widgets and platform interfaces; consider another framework if mobile support or a non-beta 3D engine is essential.
