Our verdict on AdAway
AdAway is a free, open-source ad-blocking app for Android. It blocks ads and trackers system-wide through hosts-file sources, with two operating approaches: rooted devices can update the system hosts file, while non-rooted devices can use Android’s local VPN capability. The current version supports Android 8 or newer. It is intended for Android users who want direct control over host sources and blocking rules rather than a subscription-based service. The project is distributed through F-Droid, and the official site directs users there instead of Google Play.
The free model keeps access straightforward: AdAway is presented as free software, with no paid tiers described. Its feature set includes predefined host-source lists, custom host-source support, allowlist and blocklist management, custom redirect rules, and import and export of host lists. That makes the product particularly suitable for users who want to select sources, maintain exceptions, and move host-list configurations between installations. An optional local web server can also provide responses for blocked hosts.
AdAway’s main strength is its narrow, technically focused approach to Android-wide host blocking. Non-rooted users can use local VPN mode, while rooted users can apply system hosts-file blocking. The trade-off is scope: it is Android-only and centers on host-level controls, so users seeking broader platform coverage or verified element and cookie controls should choose another ad blocker. Pick AdAway when open-source software, custom host sources, and system-wide Android control matter most; look elsewhere when browser-level or multi-platform features are the priority.
