Our verdict on 1984 Anycast DNS
1984 Anycast DNS, offered as FreeDNS, is a web-based managed DNS service from Icelandic hosting company 1984 ehf. It is designed for individuals and businesses that need to host DNS zones without purchasing other 1984 services. The free plan includes Anycast DNS, unlimited zones, automatic DNSSEC handling, web redirects, and Dynamic DNS. It fits solo users, small businesses, and mid-market teams that want straightforward authoritative DNS or a secondary DNS service.
The feature set covers common operational needs. FreeDNS supports A, AAAA, CAA, CNAME, MX, SRV, TXT, SSHFP, and TLSA records, along with web request forwarding and configuration change history. Earlier configurations can be restored through rollback, which gives administrators a practical way to recover from DNS changes. The service runs on multiple servers worldwide using Anycast, and it can operate as secondary DNS for an external primary nameserver. Support is available through email, chat, phone, and documentation.
FreeDNS is most suitable when cost, zone capacity, DNSSEC, and standard record management matter more than advanced traffic controls. Its web-only approach limits teams that want automated management through a general DNS API. It also lacks verified health checks and traffic steering, so organizations needing routing decisions based on endpoint status or traffic conditions should choose a service with those capabilities. Pick 1984 Anycast DNS for simple authoritative zones, Dynamic DNS, rollback history, or secondary DNS at no charge; look elsewhere for API-led workflows or sophisticated traffic management.
