Invite people by account rather than relying on a shareable link when you want tighter access. If you only need to send a few pictures, a private conversation may be simpler. Instagram’s Instants is another way to share with selected people, but it remains part of Instagram—not an independent alternative.

Choose based on whether you need account-based invitations or link access, whether friends should contribute, what devices and web access they use, and how much image quality and metadata matter. No option prevents a recipient from copying or redistributing photos they can view.
Google Photos: collaborative albums with link controls
Google Photos supports sharing an album with particular Google Accounts or with a shareable link. Account-based invitations are the more controlled choice for a small group. A link is convenient, but it behaves like a bearer credential: someone who receives it may pass it on. Google describes album privacy controls in its shared album privacy guidance, and its Google Photos Safety & Privacy page explains broader service protections.
Turn off a link to revoke it
If a link has spread beyond the intended group, turn off link sharing in the album’s sharing controls. Google says turning link sharing back on creates a new link. Removing a person alone does not close access for everyone who still has the old link while link sharing is enabled. See Google’s sharing instructions for platform-specific steps.

Use an album for ongoing sharing, a conversation for a few images
Albums suit a continuing collection where people may add pictures. For a short exchange, a Google Photos conversation may be simpler; Google Photos Help states a limit of 20,000 photos per conversation. That figure applies to conversations, not to shared albums.
Apple Photos: convenient for Apple groups, with version differences
Apple Shared Albums let participants add photos, videos, and comments, and the album owner can remove participants. Apple’s Shared Albums instructions cover setup and participation. Newer software generations add full-resolution sharing and web participation, so do not assume every existing album or participant has the same capabilities. Before choosing this option for a mixed group, check that everyone can use the relevant album experience on their devices. Apple’s privacy information also distinguishes private invitations from link sharing: participant identities are not made available to people who have not been invited and accepted a private share. However, Apple says file names and the Apple Account holder’s first and last name are available to anyone with the sharing link, including Apple. A link should not be treated as anonymous. Instagram Instants: selected sharing, not an Instagram replacement
In its May 2026 announcement, Meta described Instants as a way to share with selected recipients, including close friends or followers who follow back. Shared instants are stored in an archive visible only to the user for up to one year, according to Meta. The announcement also says Instagram’s Block, Mute, and Restrict controls apply. These are Meta’s product descriptions, not independent verification of privacy performance. The separate-app version is limited to select countries; Instants should not be presented as a standalone service outside Instagram. Details are in Meta’s Instants announcement.

Set up sharing with fewer privacy surprises
- Choose the audience. Invite specific accounts for a limited group. Use a link only when the convenience is worth the risk that it may be forwarded.
- Decide who can contribute. Check the album’s collaboration settings before inviting people if you want a view-only collection or a group album.
- Check compatibility. For Apple Shared Albums, confirm participants’ software supports the features you need, especially full-resolution sharing or web participation.
- Review photo metadata. Apple says its devices let users decide whether to include location, edit history, and depth data when sharing. Review those options before sending sensitive images.
- Plan for copies. Access controls govern viewing in the service; they cannot reliably erase copies a recipient has already saved or prevent onward sharing.
What “private” does—and does not—mean
These tools provide ways to restrict who can access shared content, but the available documentation does not establish that shared albums in either Google Photos or Apple Photos are end-to-end encrypted. Do not equate an invitation or an unguessable link with encryption, invisibility, or guaranteed control after someone views a photo. Treat every shared image as disclosed to every participant.
