For image generation that can keep prompts and images on your own hardware, use a local interface such as ComfyUI or Fooocus, or an on-device app such as Private Diffusion on supported Apple devices. Local generation is not automatically private: initial downloads require internet access, and optional cloud APIs, partner nodes, or extensions can change where data goes.

What are private alternatives to cloud-based AI image generators?

The main alternatives are software that runs open-weight image models on your computer and apps that perform inference directly on a supported device. In either case, the model runs locally once its files are installed, rather than sending every prompt to a hosted generator. Your practical choice depends on your operating system and hardware, the models and editing tools you need, and how much setup you are willing to manage.

  • ComfyUI: Best suited to people who want to build, reuse, or automate flexible node-based workflows.
  • Fooocus: A simpler, prompt-focused interface for Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL), with an important limitation: its maintainers describe the project as in limited long-term support with bug fixes only.
  • Automatic1111 WebUI or InvokeAI: Other open-source interfaces Stability AI lists for local Stable Diffusion workflows; their interface styles and tools differ.
  • Private Diffusion: An Apple-device app for text-to-image generation, described by its vendor as a TestFlight beta.

Which local AI image generator fits your workflow?

ComfyUI for reusable, configurable workflows

ComfyUI uses node graphs to connect generation and editing steps. Its repository documents a broad model catalog and says the software runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, with support for multiple GPU types through manual installation. That flexibility is useful when you want to control or automate a workflow, but building graphs adds a learning curve. ComfyUI says its core can run fully offline; optional API and partner nodes are a separate consideration.

Fooocus for a more focused SDXL interface

Fooocus is designed around prompt-driven generation with fewer controls to manage. Its maintainers describe it as free, open source, and offline, and list a 4 GB NVIDIA GPU as the minimum. It uses SDXL, downloads model files on first run, and is currently labeled by its maintainers as “Limited Long-Term Support (LTS) with Bug Fixes Only.” They say there are no current plans to add newer model architectures, so check whether SDXL and the project’s maintenance direction match your needs.

Automatic1111 WebUI and InvokeAI as other local interfaces

Stability AI’s self-hosting guide lists Automatic1111 WebUI and InvokeAI alongside ComfyUI. It describes Automatic1111 as a traditional web interface with community and plugin support, and InvokeAI as a modern dashboard focused on workflow clarity, with tools such as upscaling and inpainting. These descriptions are from the model publisher’s guide, not a controlled comparison of the interfaces.

Private Diffusion for supported Apple devices

Private Diffusion is a distinct on-device option for Apple hardware. Its vendor says the app runs on iOS, iPadOS, or macOS 26.4 and Apple Silicon, with available models depending on device memory. The documented feature set is text-to-image: the app does not offer image-to-image generation or inpainting. The vendor describes it as a TestFlight beta, free during beta, with launch pricing undecided at the time its page was accessed.

Does local image generation send prompts to a server?

Not necessarily. In a local workflow, the model performs inference on your device, which can keep prompts and generated images there. Stability AI describes local Stable Diffusion generation as offline and independent of cloud services. ComfyUI says its core “Runs fully offline: core does not download anything unless you request it.” Private Diffusion says that after its model is downloaded, the app makes no network calls from its code.

Those statements describe the products’ own documentation; they are not independent privacy audits. Keep the boundary clear:

Product or setup Published hardware guidance Context
Stability AI self-hosting guide At least 6 GB of NVIDIA GPU VRAM; RTX 3060 or higher recommended Applies to the setup described in Stability AI’s guide, not every model or front end.
Fooocus 4 GB minimum GPU memory, NVIDIA Fooocus repository requirement; the software uses SDXL.
Private Diffusion 8 GB minimum device memory; some models require 12 GB or 16 GB tiers Vendor’s stated requirements for supported Apple devices.
ComfyUI No single minimum stated in its download FAQ Its FAQ strongly recommends a dedicated GPU and says more VRAM allows larger models and batches.

The numbers refer to different products and hardware concepts: GPU VRAM is not interchangeable with total device memory. Stability AI’s guide also lists Windows, macOS with an M-series chip, or Linux, plus Python 3.10 or later, Git, and Conda or venv for its described setup. ComfyUI notes that model files, rather than the interface software itself, account for substantial disk use. Check the requirements for the exact model and installation method you plan to use.

How to choose a local image generator

  1. Choose the workflow first. Pick a node-based interface such as ComfyUI if you need reusable, configurable steps. Consider Fooocus if a simpler SDXL prompt workflow is enough. Look at InvokeAI or Automatic1111 if their documented interface and tooling better match your preferences.
  2. Check model and editing support. Confirm that the interface supports the model family you want and the tasks you need, such as inpainting, image-to-image editing, or upscaling. Private Diffusion is limited to text-to-image according to its FAQ.
  3. Match the hardware to the model. Check the model’s memory requirements, your operating system, GPU compatibility, and available storage. Published minimums for one product should not be treated as universal requirements.
  4. Review the privacy boundary. Identify whether the workflow uses only local inference or includes API nodes, partner services, plugins, or extensions. Disable cloud-connected components if you do not want to use them.
  5. Check maintenance and terms. Fooocus’s bug-fix-only status may matter if you want newer model architectures. For commercial use, read the specific model’s license and terms; running a model locally does not itself grant commercial rights.

What local tools do not establish

The official pages describe features, platforms, and hardware guidance, but do not provide a controlled head-to-head test establishing which option is fastest or produces the highest-quality images. Results depend on the model, settings, hardware, and workflow. Choose based on documented support and your own requirements rather than assuming one interface is universally best.
