Those are Proton’s claims, not independently audited findings. Other services offer different controls and data practices, so the right choice depends on what you share and which settings you need.
“No training” does not mean no retention, human review, or collection of files and connected-app data. Compare those separately, and check the policy that applies to your region, app version, and account type.
What to compare before choosing a private AI assistant
Privacy is not a single setting. Before entering sensitive material, check these distinct questions:
- Model improvement: Are your chats used to improve models by default, only after you opt in, or under other exceptions?
- Retention and deletion: How long can chats or feedback remain stored, and what does deleting a conversation remove?
- Review: Can people review some conversations, for example for safety or service improvement?
- Other data: Does the service collect uploaded files, feedback, device details, or context from connected apps?
- Account scope: Do the rules cover a personal account, a work or school account, or both?
- Processing model: Is the assistant hosted by the provider or running locally on your device? The services compared below are hosted; encryption claims about stored history should not be mistaken for on-device processing or end-to-end encryption of prompts while a hosted model handles them.
Policies describe providers’ stated practices. They are not independent audits, and controls can change.

Proton Lumo: strongest stated chat-history protections in this comparison
Proton presents Lumo as a privacy-focused assistant. Its product FAQ says chat history is protected with zero-access encryption, conversations are not logged, and conversations are not used to train language models. The scope matters: these statements do not prove that every type of data associated with the service receives identical treatment, nor do they mean the model runs on your device.
Proton also says guest access through Tor is available. That is an access option, not proof that every interaction is anonymous or that no data is handled. Lumo Plus is associated with unlimited chats and faster responses; those features do not change the privacy claims’ scope.

Google Gemini Apps: review what prompts, files, and connected services may expose
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026, describes a broad set of information the service may collect or handle: prompts, files and media, feedback, generated content, device and app information, and connected services. It says information may be used to maintain and improve services, including models, and that human reviewers review some collected data.
This is a reason to inspect what you attach or connect, not just what you type. The notice is for signed-in Gemini Apps use; signed-out users are directed to Google’s broader privacy policy. A connected third-party service can have separate data practices, so review its policy as well.

Claude: distinguish model-improvement choices from retention
Anthropic says chats and coding sessions on Claude consumer plans may be used for model improvement when the user opts in, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or in another explicit opt-in case. Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled.
That training distinction does not settle retention or deletion. Anthropic says feedback data may be retained for up to five years. Its cited guidance concerns consumer plans; do not assume it describes commercial products.

Microsoft’s personal-account guidance for an older Copilot app describes controls for memory and personalization, model-training use, personalized ads, and conversation-history deletion. It states that conversation history is retained for 18 months. Microsoft explicitly says this older guidance does not apply to the updated Copilot app for individuals, available since August 18, 2026. Work and school accounts follow separate guidance.
Because the app version changes the scope of the instructions, do not rely on an older setting path or retention statement without checking the current Copilot app and account type.

ChatGPT: the available security page does not answer the consumer-settings comparison
The OpenAI page reviewed supports statements about encryption and security, compliance offerings, and enterprise controls. It does not establish current consumer-specific settings for model training, temporary chats, or retention. Those consumer details therefore cannot be compared fairly here.
How to reduce risk before sharing sensitive information
- Decide whether the information is necessary. Anthropic advises care with financial details, health records, passwords, and confidential business or personal documents. Remove identifying or confidential details when a task can be completed without them.
- Check the exact account and product policy. Confirm whether you are signed in, which app version you use, and whether the account is personal or organizational.
- Review the relevant controls. Check model-improvement choices, history and memory, deletion, feedback, and any connected apps or services. A training opt-out does not itself promise deletion or zero retention.
- Limit what you attach or connect. Files, media, feedback, device context, and connected-service data can be part of a service’s data handling, not just the text prompt.
- Recheck when the service changes. Product versions and privacy controls can change; Microsoft’s distinction between older and updated Copilot guidance illustrates why old instructions may no longer apply.
