Ink is liquid and goes in inkjet printers; toner is powder and goes in laser printers. They are not interchangeable. The right choice depends on what you print, how often you print, and the cost of supplies for the specific printer model—not on a universal rule that one technology is always cheaper.
How ink and toner work
Inkjet printers use liquid ink
An inkjet printhead sprays tiny droplets of liquid ink through nozzles onto the page. Depending on the printer and cartridge design, that ink may be dye-based or pigment-based. Inkjet printers are commonly chosen for photographs, blended color, graphics, and a range of paper types. HP’s inkjet-versus-laser comparison and Canon’s explanation of ink and toner describe these uses and mechanisms.
Laser printers use powdered toner
A laser printer uses an electrostatic process to form an image on a drum. Toner powder adheres to that image, transfers to paper, and is fused onto it with heat. Toner is not liquid ink and does not dry out in the same way. For the technology distinction, see HP and Canon.
Which printer type fits your printing?
| Your main need | Starting point | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly text, frequent printing, or higher volume | Monochrome laser | Printer price, toner price and declared yield, print speed, and whether the model has separately replaced imaging components. |
| Photographs, color graphics, or varied paper | Inkjet | Photo and color output, supported media, ink cost and yield, and how regularly you expect to print. |
| Long gaps between print jobs | Laser may avoid ink-drying concerns | Purchase cost and the specific printer’s maintenance needs; toner does not make the whole printer maintenance-free. |
| Regular, high-volume color printing | Compare inkjet, ink-tank, and color-laser models | Cost per usable page, color quality for the task, replacement-supply costs, and expected volume. |
These are starting points, not guarantees. HP generally positions inkjets for photo and graphics work and lasers for document volume; Canon also highlights inkjet graphics and laser value for higher-volume printing. Individual models and prices can change the result. HP and Canon provide their respective comparisons.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare ownership costs for the exact models
Upfront price alone does not tell you which printer will cost less to use. Compare the purchase price and the replacement supplies you expect to buy over the period you will own the printer. For each candidate, check the correct black and color supply prices, manufacturer-declared page yields, and your likely print volume and mix of pages.
A declared yield is an estimate, not a promise of the pages you personally will get. HP says its laser cartridge yields use ISO/IEC 19752 and 19798 methods; it also notes that some printers ship with introductory toner cartridges that yield fewer pages than replacement cartridges. Brother cautions that environment, settings, software, and printing habits can affect achieved yield. See HP’s toner yield explanation and Brother’s inkjet-versus-laser comparison.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
HP also describes ISO 19758 composite reporting for color yields. Do not treat that figure as a guarantee for every combination of text, photos, and graphics. The yield method and the printer’s supplied cartridge matter; consult HP’s yield details.
Non-use and maintenance
Liquid ink can dry out after a printer sits unused for a prolonged period, while toner does not have the same drying risk. The cited sources do not establish a single safe number of idle days for all inkjet printers, so consider your own printing habits rather than relying on a universal threshold. A laser printer can still have other model-specific maintenance needs. See HP and Canon.

Match the supply to your printer
Ink cartridges are for compatible inkjet printers; toner cartridges are for compatible laser printers. Before ordering, identify the printer’s exact model and confirm the manufacturer’s cartridge number. A supply that fits one printer technology cannot replace one designed for the other. Canon explains the distinction, and HP provides model-specific yield information at Canon and HP.
