Windows 10 and Windows 11 screenshot shortcuts
Windows offers two useful still-image shortcuts: one opens the Snipping Tool capture choices, and the other copies the whole screen. What happens after capture depends on which route you use and, in some cases, your keyboard or Windows settings.
Capture a region, window, or screen with Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool capture interface appears, choose the capture mode offered there: a rectangular or freeform area, a window, or the full screen.
- Make the selection or choose the window. The capture opens in the Snipping Tool window, where you can edit, save, or share it.
Use this shortcut when you need only part of the screen or want to choose what to capture. Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance says captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. You can also use Save As, or change automatic saving and its destination in Snipping Tool settings. If your capture is not where you expected, check those settings before taking it again.
Copy the entire screen with Print Screen
Press Print Screen—often labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn—to copy a full-screen image to the clipboard by default. Microsoft Support describes it as a “static image snapshot of your entire screen” placed in the clipboard. Open an image editor, document, or other suitable app and press Ctrl + V to paste it. This route does not by itself put a screenshot file in a folder; save it from the app after pasting.

On some PCs, Windows settings let you change the Print Screen key so it opens screen snipping instead. If pressing the key opens a capture overlay rather than copying the full screen, that setting may explain the difference.
If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on some hardware without a dedicated Print Screen key. Keyboard layouts and manufacturer behavior can vary, so if that combination does not work, use Windows logo key + Shift + S instead. A separate keyboard with a Print Screen key is optional, not a requirement for capturing a screenshot.
Still image versus video snip
Windows logo key + Shift + R opens the Snipping Tool overlay for a video snip. It is for recording a clip, not taking the still screenshot described by the other commands.

How to take a screenshot on a Mac
Mac screenshots normally save to the desktop. Use the on-screen thumbnail that appears after capture to review or edit the image; its menu can also save a screenshot to the clipboard instead.
- Entire screen: Press Shift + Command + 3.
- Selected area: Press Shift + Command + 4, then drag the crosshair over the area you want.
- Window or menu: Press Shift + Command + 4, then press Space and click the window or menu. To omit a window shadow, hold Option while clicking.
These are Mac commands, not iPhone shortcuts. Some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be captured. If a particular app does not appear in the screenshot, the app may restrict capture rather than the keyboard command being wrong.
How to take a screenshot on a Chromebook
On a Chromebook with a dedicated Screenshot key, press it and choose a full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture. If there is no Screenshot key, use the shortcuts below. The cited Google keyboard guidance targets US customers using standard English QWERTY keyboards; external keyboard layouts may label or map keys differently.

- Open the capture interface or take a partial screenshot: Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows.
- Full screenshot: Ctrl + Show Windows.
- External keyboard without Show Windows: Ctrl + Shift + F5.
Chromebook captures save to Downloads by default. You can select a different folder in the capture settings. On some external keyboards, the Windows or Command key serves in place of Search/Launcher, which can affect how a shortcut is entered.
How to take a screenshot on Android
For most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down together. If that does not work, hold the Power button for a few seconds and tap Screenshot if the option appears. Button behavior can vary by phone; if neither method works, check the device manufacturer’s instructions.

On Android 12 and later, most screens that allow scrolling support an extended screenshot. Take a screenshot, then tap Capture more and extend the selected area. This option is not available on every screen, so its absence does not necessarily mean the phone’s screenshot feature is broken.

Find the screenshot
In Google Photos, look under Collections → On this device → Screenshots. On an older device without Photos, check the Gallery app’s Screenshots album.
How to take a screenshot on an iPhone
Use the combination that matches the iPhone’s buttons, pressing and quickly releasing both buttons together:
- iPhone with Face ID: Side button + Volume Up.
- iPhone with a Home button and Side button: Side button + Home.
- iPhone with a Home button and Top button: Top button + Home.
Apple also documents Siri, AssistiveTouch, and Back Tap as alternatives to the hardware combination. Screenshots are available in Photos. The immediate review interface differs by software version: Apple’s current guidance distinguishes iOS 26 from iOS 18 and earlier. This section is for iPhone; it does not give iPad-specific instructions.

“Print Screen” is the name of a Windows key and capture behavior; Mac computers and phones generally use other shortcuts. For Windows in particular, do not assume a screenshot has failed just because no new file appeared: the Print Screen route copies to the clipboard.
Troubleshooting: when the shortcut seems not to work
- You pressed Print Screen but cannot find a file. The default behavior copies the full screen to the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl + V in an app, then save from that app. Alternatively, use the Snipping Tool shortcut.
- Print Screen opens a capture interface. The key may be configured to open screen snipping in Windows settings. Use the interface, or review that setting if you want the key’s clipboard behavior.
- Your keyboard has no PrtSc label. Look for labels such as PrtScn or PrntScrn. On some hardware, try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar; otherwise, use Windows + Shift + S.
- The screenshot saved somewhere unexpected. On Windows, check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting and destination; Mac saves to the desktop by default, Chromebook to Downloads, and phones to Photos or Gallery.
- A Chromebook shortcut does not match your key labels. Google documents the keyboard shortcuts for US English QWERTY. On an external keyboard, Windows or Command may substitute for Search/Launcher, and some keyboards do not have Show Windows.
- The Android button combination does nothing. Try holding Power and tapping Screenshot. If unavailable, consult the phone maker because button behavior differs among devices.
- A Mac app window is missing from the capture. Some apps may block screenshots of their windows. Use the built-in shortcut on another screen to distinguish an app restriction from a general shortcut problem.
