For the closest modern match, start with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It brings the series’ traps, acrobatic movement, and blade combat into a 2.5D Metroidvania. If you want the older 3D style instead, play the Sands of Time trilogy; for games outside the series, try Hollow Knight or Blasphemous for 2D exploration and combat, and Rise of the Tomb Raider or Assassin’s Creed Mirage for 3D acrobatics. The best choice depends on whether you want a maze-like map, a cinematic sequence of levels, stealth, or time-bending abilities.

Here, “like Prince of Persia” means more than a sword and a jump button: it can mean precise trap navigation, expressive acrobatics, close-range timing, or the ability to manipulate time. The games below are grouped by which part of that mix they actually share.

Which game is the closest match to Prince of Persia?

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is the strongest starting point if you want the series’ core ingredients in one modern game: platforming through dangerous spaces, sword combat, and time-related abilities. It is a new story and a different structure from the older 3D games, though, so it is not a replacement for The Sands of Time.

Released on 18 January 2024, The Lost Crown follows Sargon, a member of the Immortals, on Mount Qaf. Ubisoft Montpellier built it as a 2.5D Metroidvania: you explore a connected map, gain abilities, then use them to reach areas that were previously inaccessible. Its combat has dual blades, parries, Athra Surges, and a bow that can also function as a chakram. Time Powers include leaving a shadow marker and returning to it, which can turn a difficult jump or fight into a puzzle about positioning.

That blend is why it suits players asking for “games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” better than a game that only shares one surface feature. It has more in common with a Metroidvania such as Hollow Knight in its map and ability gates, but it keeps the series’ acrobatic movement and Persian mythic setting. It also has more combat emphasis than a pure traversal platformer.

The game offers four difficulty presets—Rookie, Warrior, Hero, and Immortal—plus custom sliders. Environmental damage can be adjusted separately from enemy difficulty, useful if you want demanding fights without making every trap equally punishing. Guided Mode marks the next objective; Memory Shards let you save an image of a room or obstacle for later reference. A 91mobiles review reported a 22-hour main-story completion with side quests remaining, which gives a rough sense of scale rather than a guaranteed playtime for every player.

The Complete Edition includes the Mask of Darkness story DLC. Ubisoft describes that expansion as a 4–6-hour addition set in Radjen’s Mind Palace, with four biomes and hazards including lasers, magical saws, and disappearing platforms. If you want the game’s full story content, look for that edition; if you already own the base game, check your platform’s edition and DLC listing before buying to avoid duplicating content. The game is available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and later mobile platforms.

As of November 2026, there is no announced Lost Crown sequel. Senior producer Abdelhak Elguess said in October 2024 that most of the team had moved to other projects. Ubisoft has also said the franchise remains important, but that statement is not a promise of a specific new game.

Which 2D games have platforming and melee combat like The Lost Crown?

Choose Hollow Knight or Blasphemous if you want an exploration-heavy map and deliberate melee combat; choose Ori if movement matters more than sword fighting. Metroid Dread, The Messenger, Dead Cells, and Guacamelee! 2 offer other variations on 2D action, but their combat, structure, or tone differs.

Hollow Knight: exploration and precision

Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight is a strong choice when the appeal of The Lost Crown is learning a sprawling map, finding new routes, and improving through precise fights. Its world and tone are far removed from mythic Persia, and it does not recreate the trap-palace fantasy. Think of it as a match for the exploration-and-combat side of the formula, not a close setting or story substitute.

Metroid Dread: cinematic 2D action

Metroid Dread is a better fit if you want a tightly paced 2D adventure with dramatic chase sequences and responsive combat. Its counters and beam weapons are not swordplay, and the mood is science fiction rather than Persian adventure. PCMag grouped it with The Lost Crown and Ori when discussing modern genre standouts; it is a useful comparison for 2D action and movement, not for weapon style.

Blasphemous and Blasphemous II: darker swordplay

The Blasphemous games combine side-scrolling platforming with deliberate hack-and-slash combat. The first released on 10 September 2019; Blasphemous II followed in 2023. They are a good pick if you want melee combat to be central and enjoy a harsher, gothic pilgrimage tone. SVG’s Sam Stone described the first game as evoking classic Prince of Persia blended with Soulsborne combat. That is a useful shorthand for its feel, but expect a much darker and gorier world than the Prince series.

Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps: traversal first

The Ori games excel at expressive 2D movement, momentum, and platforming set pieces. Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition released on 11 March 2015; Ori and the Will of the Wisps followed on 11 March 2020. They are especially good for players who remember Prince of Persia for jumps, ledges, and getting through a dangerous environment. Their combat is lighter than The Lost Crown, so they are less suitable if sword duels are the main attraction.

The Messenger: a sword, a grappling hook, and time travel

The Messenger puts a sword-wielding hero through action-platforming that develops into a time-travel structure. It is an appealing choice if you want a brisker, more playful game that mixes traversal with combat. TheGamer ranked it first in a list of games like The Lost Crown; its appeal is the combination of sword, grappling hook, and shifting time periods, not a direct reproduction of Prince’s setting or combat system.

Dead Cells: combat in repeatable runs

Dead Cells, released on 7 August 2018, is a fast 2D action roguelike rather than a connected Metroidvania campaign. Expect to build a run, fight through changing encounters, and start over after death; permadeath is part of its structure. TheGamer compared its mix of The Lost Crown-like action and Souls-inspired challenge to a 2D interpretation, while the studio Evil Empire later developed The Rogue Prince of Persia. Pick it for combat and replayable runs, not for a carefully mapped palace adventure.

Guacamelee! 2 and other worthwhile 2D options

Guacamelee! 2 (21 August 2018) is a lighter, colorful Metroidvania with brawling and local co-op. It is a sensible pick if you want the map-and-ability structure without the same emphasis on serious sword duels. The Castlevania Advance Collection is useful if you want to explore older genre roots, while Salt and Sanctuary offers a more punishing 2D Souls-like approach and a large assortment of weapons. Neither is as close to the acrobatic trap-running identity as The Lost Crown.

Which games feel most like the 3D Prince of Persia games?

For the original blend of 3D palace acrobatics, timed swordplay, and time rewind, play the Sands of Time trilogy. For a different modern adventure with 3D traversal, choose Rise of the Tomb Raider; for rooftops, stealth, and Baghdad, choose Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

The Sands of Time trilogy: the direct 3D lineage

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003), Warrior Within (2004), and The Two Thrones (2005) are not merely similar games: they are the series’ defining 3D run. Their palace parkour and sword duels are built around the Dagger of Time, whose rewind ability lets the Prince undo certain mistakes. If your memory of the series is running across walls, navigating traps, and rewinding after a bad jump, start here.

The games differ in tone and presentation, so the trilogy is not one uniform experience. The original is the clearest starting point for its time-manipulation and acrobatic premise; the sequels continue the 3D action-adventure approach. An HD trilogy collection existed on PS3 Blu-ray, but that does not establish current availability on other systems. Check the storefront or platform you intend to use rather than assuming a modern bundle is available everywhere.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: tombs and traversal

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a good 3D alternative if you want climbing, environmental puzzles, and optional challenge tombs. Those tombs bring back the feeling of reading a space and executing a route through it, though the game is a broader third-person adventure and not a sword-focused platformer. SVG identified it as a modern 3D option for Prince of Persia fans; the comparison is strongest around traversal and tomb design.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage: Baghdad, rooftops, and stealth

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a natural choice if you want a 3D city to cross by rooftops and prefer stealth and assassination to arena-style sword combat. It takes place in ninth-century Baghdad and is the strongest answer here to “Which games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown focus on stealth?” The broader Assassin’s Creed series is often treated as a spiritual successor to the 3D Prince games, but Mirage is not a trap-palace platformer and its combat is not a substitute for the Prince’s time-rewind duels.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: the stealth-focused 2.5D option

The Chronicles entries—China, India, and Russia—are side-scrolling stealth games rather than conventional Metroidvanias. Their 2.5D perspective makes them closer to The Lost Crown visually than Mirage, but stealth is the priority and sword combat is not the main attraction. GameRant cited a Metacritic score of 70 for the series in its list; that figure is a review-aggregation score, not a measure of how closely the games match Prince of Persia.

Which Prince of Persia games are still active, and what happened to the remake?

The Lost Crown and The Rogue Prince of Persia are the notable released official games in the current lineup; the announced Sands of Time remake was cancelled. The cancellation does not mean Ubisoft has said it is abandoning the franchise, but it does mean there is no remake to wait for or recommend as a future release.

Ubisoft announced the remake at Ubisoft Forward in 2020. On 30 January 2026, the official Prince of Persia team said: “We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.” The statement said the project had potential but would need more time and investment to reach the quality expected. In the same statement, the team said the decision did not mean it was stepping away from the franchise. Those comments indicate continued interest in the series, not a confirmed replacement project or release date.

The Rogue Prince of Persia, developed by Evil Empire, reached full release on 20 August 2025. It is a 2.5D roguelike with comic-book art and short, repeatable runs—not a sequel to The Lost Crown and not a connected-map Metroidvania. Its fluid acrobatics and swordplay make it a strong choice if what you want is more official Prince action, but its run-based structure is a major difference. Ubisoft’s hub promotes it for Nintendo Switch 2; it also released on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC storefronts including Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and Epic.

The franchise’s present status is worth keeping separate from rumors about future games. Ubisoft has placed Prince of Persia within Creative House 4 alongside properties including Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil. That organizational assignment does not confirm a new game is in development. As of November 2026, no new title was confirmed in the sources consulted.

What games use time rewind, time-stop, or other Prince-like powers?

If time manipulation is the part you want to keep, try Timespinner for frozen enemies as platforms or Braid for rewind-based puzzles. Super Time Force, Touhou Luna Nights, and The Messenger offer different time tricks, but none reproduces the exact Dagger of Time loop.

Timespinner turns time control into a traversal tool: freezing enemies can create temporary platforms. It is a useful fit for players who want the ability to change the state of a room and then use that change to move through it. Braid (6 August 2008) is built around rewinding time to solve puzzles rather than sword fighting or platform combat; GameRant cited a Metacritic score of 93 in its comparison list.

Super Time Force uses time-dilation and past versions of the player in run-and-gun action, a loose cousin to The Lost Crown’s multi-Sargon puzzles. Touhou Luna Nights is a Metroidvania built around time-stop abilities. The Messenger uses time travel as part of its larger structure. These are best understood as mechanic matches: they share a time-related idea, not the full combination of sword duels, trap timing, and acrobatic movement.

Are there older cinematic platformers worth playing?

Flashback (1992) is a strong older alternative if you want the deliberate side-scrolling movement and cinematic presentation associated with the original Prince of Persia. SVG considers it closer to that original game than Another World. It does not offer the same swordplay or Persian setting, but its careful movement and visual storytelling put it in the same broad lineage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nosferatu (1994, Super Nintendo) is a more unusual option: a horror-styled platformer that echoes the SNES versions of Prince of Persia. It has an especially unforgiving old-school limitation—no save or password system—and, according to SVG, a happy ending depends on dying fewer than eight times. Choose it for retro curiosity and challenge, not convenience or a modernized Prince experience.

How should you choose between these games?

Start with the feature you most want to preserve, because no one alternative captures every version of Prince of Persia equally well.

  • You want the nearest modern package: choose The Lost Crown. It combines exploration, platforming, sword combat, and time powers.
  • You want the classic 3D experience: play The Sands of Time first, then continue with Warrior Within and The Two Thrones.
  • You want a large 2D map and precise combat: choose Hollow Knight; for a darker melee-focused take, choose Blasphemous.
  • You mainly want beautiful movement and difficult jumps: choose an Ori game.
  • You want stealth rather than sword duels: choose Assassin’s Creed Mirage for 3D city movement or Assassin’s Creed Chronicles for 2.5D stealth.
  • You want more official Prince action in short bursts: choose The Rogue Prince of Persia, accepting that it is a roguelike rather than a map-based adventure.
  • You want time powers above all: try Timespinner for traversal puzzles or Braid for puzzle-focused rewinding.

Structure matters as much as camera angle. A Metroidvania rewards remembering blocked paths and returning with new abilities; a linear cinematic adventure concentrates on authored sequences; a roguelike resets the route across runs. Combat matters too: The Lost Crown asks for parries and timing, Guacamelee! 2 leans toward brawling, Mirage emphasizes stealth, and Dead Cells builds its rhythm around repeated runs. Match those differences to the experience you want rather than choosing only by genre label.

Finally, treat difficulty and accessibility as part of the decision. The Lost Crown lets players use presets or custom settings and has Guided Mode, while Dead Cells makes death and replay central to its structure. Nosferatu represents the opposite end of the convenience spectrum, with no save or password system. If you want traps without harsh punishment, the custom options in The Lost Crown make it the most flexible recommendation in this group.

How these recommendations were selected

The games are grouped by the actual element they share with Prince of Persia rather than presented as if every 2D action game were interchangeable. The comparisons prioritize precise platforming and trap navigation, close-range combat, 3D acrobatics, stealth, map exploration, and time manipulation. Release dates and specific mechanics are attributed to published sources where relevant; no recommendation implies that a game has been tested by this publication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a game like Prince of Persia with a rewind button?

For a direct Prince-series take, the Dagger of Time in the original The Sands of Time trilogy is the clearest match. Braid also centers on rewinding, but uses it for puzzle solving rather than sword combat and palace parkour.

Is The Lost Crown a sequel to the old Prince of Persia games?

The Lost Crown is a new adventure featuring Sargon, not a continuation of the Prince’s story in The Sands of Time. It carries forward the franchise’s platforming and time-manipulation ideas while using a 2.5D Metroidvania structure.

Can I play The Lost Crown without being good at platform games?

It has difficulty presets, custom sliders, and Guided Mode, so players can adjust combat and get help finding objectives. Its movement challenges still make platforming part of the experience, but the settings provide more flexibility than a fixed-difficulty retro game.

Is The Rogue Prince of Persia connected to The Lost Crown?

No. The Rogue Prince of Persia is a separate roguelike developed by Evil Empire, with short runs rather than The Lost Crown’s connected Metroidvania map. It shares the franchise and acrobatic action, not a direct sequel relationship.
