There is no single winner: the right choice depends on the specific ceremony, year, and your location. Check the event organizer’s official viewing page first, then verify that a live-TV service carries the required local station in your ZIP code. Prime Video’s announced exclusive Emmy role begins with the 2027 ceremony; it does not make Prime Video a universal home for awards shows.
How to choose a service for a specific award show
- Find the official viewing information for the exact ceremony and year. Rights can change from one event or year to the next. For example, the Academy’s page for the 98th Oscars lists a local ABC broadcast, live streaming on Hulu, and live-TV options including Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV: How to Watch the Oscars.
- Check that the option is live, not delayed on demand. Some services distinguish between plan tiers. For the 2025 Golden Globes, the event announcement said the live CBS and Paramount+ options were for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, while Essential subscribers got next-day on-demand access. That is an example of tier differences, not confirmation of rights for a later ceremony: Paramount’s 2025 Golden Globes announcement.
- Verify local access. Live-TV channel lineups depend on ZIP code. A free over-the-air broadcast also depends on receiving the local station; check the broadcaster and reception for your home before relying on that route.
- Compare the full cost with how you will use the service. Check the current monthly price, offer end date, and cancellation terms. A live-TV subscription may make sense if you will use its other channels, but may be hard to justify for one ceremony alone.
- Check replay and recording rules if you cannot watch live. Confirm whether the event can be recorded and how long a recording or on-demand replay remains available.
What Prime Video offers—and when
Amazon and the Television Academy announced a six-year agreement making Prime Video the exclusive global home for the Emmy Awards beginning with the 2027 ceremony. The announced stream will be live and free, without a Prime Video subscription, in more than 240 countries and territories. These terms apply to the Emmy agreement; they do not establish that Prime Video carries the 2026 Emmys or other award shows. See the announcement from Amazon.
Television Academy chair Cris Abrego described the arrangement this way: “Having a dedicated home with Prime Video allows us to build on that legacy with unprecedented global reach and a broader commitment to the Television Academy and our mission throughout the year.”
How live-TV streaming compares
Unlike a service carrying one event under a specific rights deal, a live-TV subscription can provide access to a wider channel lineup. Whether that lineup includes the ceremony depends on the event and, for local stations, your location.

Its live content includes ads; its unlimited DVR stores recordings for up to nine months. Hulu + Live TV | Whether the needed local channel and event are available in your ZIP code, and the current plan price and terms. |
| YouTube TV | YouTube TV describes access to local and national networks, including ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. It says local network coverage is available in over 98% of U.S. TV households. Its page displayed $82.99 per month when checked for this article. YouTube TV | Your local lineup and the current price; availability depends on ZIP code and prices can change. |

Which option fits your viewing plan?
- You want the 98th Oscars: The Academy lists a free local ABC broadcast, live streaming on Hulu, and live-TV services including Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV. Confirm availability in your area on the Academy’s viewing page.
- You want the Emmys in 2026: The announced Prime Video agreement does not start until the 2027 ceremony. Use the official viewing information for the 2026 event rather than assuming the future deal applies.
- You want the Emmys from 2027 onward: The announced Prime Video stream is live and free, so a Prime Video subscription is not required for that stream, subject to the agreement’s announced scope.
- You watch several events or want more channels: Compare live-TV services based on their current local lineup, total cost, and other channels you will use—not just one awards telecast.
- You only need a free local broadcast: An indoor HDTV antenna may be an option for U.S. viewers if local ABC reception is adequate. Check reception for your address; an antenna cannot provide an event available only through a streaming service.
Prices and availability can change
Provider pages are not fixed price lists. Hulu’s page displayed a limited-time offer of $49.99 for one month followed by $99.99 per month, ending October 26, 2026. YouTube TV displayed $82.99 per month. These are dated page prices, not lasting quotes or recommendations; check each provider’s current price and terms before subscribing. For local channel access, use the provider’s ZIP-code lookup as well as the event organizer’s viewing page.
