A price target is an analyst’s stated target for a stock; fair value is an estimate of what the stock may be worth based on assumptions about the company’s fundamentals. Neither is a promise of the stock’s future price. To compare competing numbers, check what each one measures, when and how it was produced, the assumptions behind it, and the analyst’s disclosures.
What is the difference between a price target and fair value?
A stock’s market price is the price at which buyers and sellers agree at a particular moment. A price target is an analyst’s stated target price for a stock. Fair value, often discussed as intrinsic value, is an estimate of worth based on assumptions about the company and its prospects. The target is an analyst opinion about a stock price; intrinsic value is a fundamentals-based judgment. They are related, but not interchangeable.
FINRA describes intrinsic value as an estimate of what an investment is “truly” worth regardless of its current market value. Relevant fundamentals may include earnings, assets, cash flow, growth prospects, and interest rates. Because people can assess those factors differently, intrinsic value is subjective, not an objectively observable price. FINRA, “Defining the Value of an Investment”.
Market price can move independently of either estimate. A target or fair-value estimate may help frame a decision, but neither establishes where a stock will trade.

What do the related valuation terms mean?
- Market value: For a share, this is its current market price. A company’s market capitalization also accounts for the number of shares outstanding.
- Book value: Accounting equity—assets minus liabilities. It can be a weak standalone guide for a business whose valuable brands or intellectual property are not well reflected in its accounts.
- Enterprise value: Market value of equity plus debt, less cash. It provides a broader basis for comparing companies with different debt levels.
- Intrinsic value: A subjective, fundamentals-based estimate used to judge whether the market price appears low or high relative to estimated worth.
These measures answer different questions. For example, book value is an accounting measure, while enterprise value includes debt and cash; neither should be mistaken for an analyst’s price target.

| What to check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Type of figure | Is it a current market price, an analyst’s price target, or a fair-value/intrinsic-value estimate? |
| Producer and date | Which analyst or firm produced it, when was the report issued, and does it state a time horizon? Do not assume a universal horizon for price targets. |
| Method and inputs | Which valuation model or metric was used? What assumptions were made about earnings, assets, cash flows, growth, interest rates, or comparable companies? |
| Business and peer context | How does the company compare with its own history, relevant peers, and industry norms? Consider debt and qualitative business risks as well. |
| Uncertainty | Does the report show scenarios or sensitivity analysis? Treat that as a question to investigate, not as a feature every report necessarily includes. |
| Definitions and disclosures | How does the firm define its rating labels? What conflicts or other disclosures does the report identify? |
FINRA recommends using multiple measures and comparing a company with its historical metrics and industry averages for a fuller picture. A low valuation relative to peers or history is not automatically a bargain: the business may have deteriorating fundamentals. FINRA’s discussion of valuation context.
Why do analysts have different price targets?
Estimates can differ because analysts may be working from different report dates, valuation methods, forecasts, or assumptions. They may also use different share counts or financial projections. A target based on one set of expectations is not directly comparable with an intrinsic-value estimate built from another.

- Check timing. Compare report dates and stated horizons. A newer estimate may reflect information that was unavailable when an older one was issued.
- Compare methods and inputs. Identify which model or metric each analyst uses and what assumptions drive the result.
- Find the assumptions that matter. Ask what would need to be true about earnings, growth, cash flow, interest rates, debt, or peers for each estimate to make sense.
- Read the report’s own rating definitions. Rating labels and their meanings can vary from firm to firm, so use the definitions in that report rather than assuming a label has a universal meaning.
- Review disclosures. Look for the firm’s and analyst’s relevant conflicts and other disclosures before treating a recommendation as independent guidance.
Averaging estimates that use different dates, methods, or assumptions can hide rather than resolve the disagreement. First understand why the numbers diverge.

Analyst recommendations may affect stock prices, and the SEC notes that potential conflicts can include a firm’s relationships, compensation, and ownership. Read the report’s disclosures and rating definitions rather than relying on the headline rating alone. The SEC investor alert states: “As a general matter, investors should not rely solely on an analyst’s recommendation when deciding whether to buy, hold, or sell a stock.” U.S. SEC, “Analyzing Analyst Recommendations”.
