Predictive failure analytics can support reliability in safety-critical automotive electronics by detecting degradation, estimating remaining useful life (RUL) when that estimate is meaningful, and triggering an appropriate response before a fault produces an unsafe error. It is not a safety guarantee or a substitute for ISO 26262 evidence: the detection method, timing, uncertainty and response must all fit the specific fault and be justified in the vehicle’s safety case.

What predictive failure analytics does in a vehicle

In this context, predictive failure analytics is an umbrella term for methods that monitor safety-related electrical/electronic (E/E) hardware as it ages or degrades. ISO/TR 9839:2023 describes predictive maintenance as techniques used to detect degrading faults, predict remaining useful life and react appropriately.

Detecting degradation before a hard failure

A conventional diagnostic may identify a fault after a limit is exceeded. A predictive mechanism instead looks for evidence that a component or hardware element is moving toward a fault condition. The relevant signal could be evaluated in the vehicle or by a remote service, and data-driven methods, including machine learning, are among the approaches discussed by the report.

Estimating remaining useful life

RUL is an estimate of how long a degrading element can continue to perform within defined limits. It is useful only when the degradation mode is observable, the estimate’s uncertainty is understood and there is enough time to take a safe action. An RUL value without a defined decision and response does not by itself improve functional safety.

Reacting appropriately

The response might involve a service notification, a controlled replacement, a change to fault handling or another action defined by the system design. The analytics method is therefore one part of a chain: sensing, diagnosis, prediction, decision and response.

What ISO/TR 9839:2023 covers

ISO/TR 9839:2023, Road vehicles — Application of predictive maintenance to hardware with ISO 26262-5, is a first-edition technical report published by the International Organization for Standardization in August 2023. Its stated intended use is predictive maintenance for detecting degrading faults in safety-related E/E hardware elements developed in the ISO 26262 context, where that degradation is relevant.

Question What the technical report establishes
Is it a regulation? No. It is an ISO technical report providing guidance and a state-of-the-art survey.
Does it prescribe one algorithm or architecture? No. Specific technical implementations of predictive-maintenance solutions are explicitly out of scope.
What activities does it connect? Detection of degrading faults, RUL prediction and an appropriate reaction.
What is its safety role? It presents approaches for considering degradation and predictive maintenance in an ISO 26262 safety argument.

The report’s scope is narrower than “vehicle reliability” in general. It concerns safety-related hardware and degradation mechanisms that matter to the ISO 26262 analysis; it does not certify a product, approve a machine-learning model or guarantee a fleet-level reliability improvement.

How analytics fits an ISO 26262 safety argument

ISO/TR 9839 notes that predictive-maintenance safety mechanisms are not explicitly covered as a dedicated mechanism in the ISO 26262 series. Its value is to provide ways of reasoning about them alongside the established safety lifecycle.

1. Define the degrading fault

Start with the hardware element, degradation mechanism, operating conditions and failure effect. The team must show why the degradation is safety-relevant and what observable behavior distinguishes it from normal variation or unrelated faults. The report identifies fault classification and degradation failure rates as part of this analysis.

2. Establish detection coverage and timing

A diagnostic mechanism must detect the relevant condition with adequate coverage and early enough for the planned reaction. ISO/TR 9839 highlights diagnostic-coverage evaluation for predictive mechanisms. A model that detects a trend only after the safety margin has disappeared cannot support the same claim as one that detects it during a serviceable interval.

3. Treat RUL as an uncertain estimate

RUL prediction should be bounded by its assumptions, confidence and operating envelope. The safety argument needs to address false negatives, false positives, uncertainty growth and cases in which no trustworthy RUL can be produced. A prediction should not be treated as a deterministic deadline unless the evidence supports that interpretation.

4. Link the result to a defined response

The predicted condition must lead to an action that is specified, time-bounded and appropriate to the fault-handling concept. Possible actions include entering a safe state, maintaining a degraded but controlled function, scheduling service before the risk increases or escalating to another diagnostic. The report’s central principle is that prediction contributes to the safety case only when detection and response fit the fault context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Preserve evidence across the lifecycle

Assumptions, training or calibration data, operating limits, diagnostic coverage, uncertainty treatment, reaction timing and field updates should remain traceable to the safety requirements. The safety argument must explain what happens when data are missing, sensors are themselves faulty, communications fail or the analytics function is unavailable.

A practical workflow for a predictive safety mechanism

  1. Select the safety-relevant degradation mode. Define the affected E/E hardware, its failure effect and the conditions under which degradation matters.
  2. Choose observable indicators. Identify measurements or diagnostic features that distinguish progressive degradation from normal operating variation.
  3. Set the detection decision. Specify what constitutes a detected degrading fault, including timing, coverage and handling of unavailable or contradictory data.
  4. Assess whether RUL is meaningful. Use an RUL estimate only for degradation modes with sufficient observability and a response window; otherwise use a different diagnostic or a conservative fault reaction.
  5. Define the response path. Connect detection to the vehicle behavior, service action or replacement decision required by the safety concept.
  6. Verify and monitor in operation. Check performance over the intended environmental and duty-cycle range, monitor drift and preserve the ability to fall back to a safe strategy.
  7. Update the safety argument. Record the assumptions, evidence and residual uncertainties in the relevant ISO 26262 work products.

Local and remote analytics are design choices, not safety claims

ISO/TR 9839 recognizes data-driven methods applied locally or remotely. Neither location is inherently safer; the choice changes the failure modes and evidence required.

Architecture Potential characteristics Questions the safety case must answer
Local, in-vehicle analysis Immediate access to vehicle signals and a response that does not depend on a network connection. Can the hardware, software and model meet timing, resource, cybersecurity and independence requirements? What happens if the local analytics function fails?
Remote analysis Fleet-scale data processing and the possibility of updating models or combining service information. What are the effects of lost connectivity, delayed data, corrupted data, cloud-service failure, privacy constraints and an incorrect or outdated model?

A hybrid design is possible, but every dependency introduced by the remote path must be accounted for in the fault-handling concept. The report does not mandate a particular deployment model.

This distinction matters. A predictive mechanism used to optimize maintenance intervals or convenience features is not automatically a functional-safety mechanism. When it is relied upon to manage a malfunction-related hazard, its assumptions, diagnostic effectiveness and response must be incorporated into the applicable safety reasoning. ISO/TR 9839 supplies guidance for considering degradation and predictive maintenance in that reasoning; it does not replace the ISO 26262 lifecycle.

What NHTSA materials establish

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration materials describe agency research into advanced diagnostics, prognostics and failure-response mechanisms for safety-critical automotive electronic control systems. A separate NHTSA report page says the agency will continue monitoring and providing guidance on advanced prognostics, diagnostics and integrated vehicle-health monitoring and management.

These sources demonstrate research and regulatory attention, not a generally applicable legal requirement to deploy predictive failure analytics. They should not be read as a mandate or as evidence that a specific analytics architecture satisfies U.S. regulatory obligations.

What is—and is not—demonstrated about reliability improvement

The cited primary sources do not provide a named percentage for failure reduction, reliability improvement, safety improvement or cost savings from predictive failure analytics in critical automotive applications. The existence of ISO/TR 9839 and NHTSA research is not a measured outcome. Any claimed benefit must therefore be established for the particular hardware, degradation mode, operating population and response process rather than borrowed from unrelated industrial predictive-maintenance studies.

Engineering checklist before relying on a prediction

  • Is the target a defined, safety-relevant degrading fault rather than a generic anomaly?
  • Are the indicators observable throughout the intended operating range?
  • Has diagnostic coverage been evaluated, including missed detections and misleading detections?
  • Is the detection time sufficient for the specified safe response?
  • Are RUL uncertainty, confidence limits and no-prediction cases explicitly handled?
  • Does the response remain safe if the model, sensor, processor, network or data source fails?
  • Are model changes, calibration changes and field data controlled within the safety lifecycle?
  • Can the safety argument show traceability from the degradation assumption to the final vehicle action?
