Neither a prebuilt gaming PC nor a do-it-yourself build is always cheaper. Compare exact, equivalent parts at current local prices, then weigh the total against the time, support, and upgrade flexibility you get. A prebuilt prioritizes convenience; building your own gives you more control. A system configured and assembled by an integrator can sit between the two.

How to compare the total cost fairly

There is no dependable rule that building is cheaper. Component prices, availability, demand, and volume discounts change the comparison. Intel notes that no one category—prebuilt, custom-built, or DIY—is consistently the least expensive. Compare a specific computer with a parts list that would deliver comparable performance, using prices for your region and the same date.

Include the full cost on both sides: CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, motherboard, power supply, cooling, and case, plus any operating-system license, shipping, assembly, and discounts. For a prebuilt, check the complete parts list rather than comparing only its processor and graphics card with a DIY build. Two PCs with similar headline CPU and GPU names can differ in memory configuration, storage, power supply, cooling, and room for future upgrades.

HP’s 2026 guide estimates a typical prebuilt premium of 10–20% over equivalent individual parts, including a Windows license. That is HP’s estimate, not a universal price rule; actual totals depend on the system and local market. HP also gives $1,200–$2,200 as a typical gaming-PC price range in 2026, but this vendor estimate is not a verified basket for every country or performance tier. Its guide estimates that the GPU accounts for 30–40% of total build cost; that, too, is an attributed estimate rather than an audited market statistic. HP’s 2026 gaming-PC cost guide provides the context for these figures.

What you get with a prebuilt gaming PC

Less work before you can play

A prebuilt arrives assembled and is generally intended to be ready to set up and use. The manufacturer may include an operating system and support or warranty coverage, but those details vary. Confirm what is included, how long coverage lasts, and how repairs are handled for the exact model before buying. The convenience has value if you would rather not research compatibility, assemble components, install the operating system, or troubleshoot a new build.

A simpler support route, with less choice

With a prebuilt, you typically start with the system seller or manufacturer when the PC has a problem. That can be simpler than diagnosing which separately purchased component is at fault and contacting its manufacturer. In exchange, you have less say over the individual parts unless the seller offers configuration choices. Check the exact motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, cooling, and case—not just the CPU and GPU—to understand what you are buying. Manufacturer guidance from MSI and Intel likewise emphasizes checking the configuration and service provisions.

What you get by building your own

Control over parts and design

DIY lets you choose each component to suit your budget, performance goals, appearance, noise preferences, and plans for later upgrades. You can decide where to spend more and where a less expensive part is sufficient, rather than accepting the prebuilt maker’s component mix. That control is useful only if the parts work together: check CPU and motherboard compatibility, memory support, power requirements, cooling, case dimensions, and the graphics card’s size.

Responsibility for assembly and troubleshooting

Building takes research and time, followed by assembly, operating-system setup, and troubleshooting if the system does not work as expected. Component warranties still matter, but instead of one system-level service route you may need to identify the faulty part and deal with its manufacturer or retailer. If you want to choose more of the components but do not want to assemble the machine, an integrator’s configured system is a middle option. Intel describes the differences among DIY, custom-built, and prebuilt systems in its comparison guide; CORSAIR’s guide also discusses the time and effort involved in building.

How to judge upgradeability

“Prebuilt” does not automatically mean difficult to upgrade, and “DIY” does not guarantee that every future component will fit. Upgrade potential depends on the actual motherboard, case, power supply, and system layout. MSI puts it plainly: “A common concern has always been upgradeability. Can you upgrade a prebuilt PC? The answer is – it depends on the manufacturer.” See MSI’s explanation of prebuilt configurations.

  • Motherboard and processor: Identify the motherboard and check its supported CPU options and memory support. Do not assume a future processor will work just because it fits the same general category of PC.
  • Memory and storage: Check the number of free memory slots, supported memory configuration, and available storage connectors, slots, or bays. Confirm the interface and physical space needed for the upgrade you have in mind.
  • Power supply and graphics card: Check the power supply’s capacity and connectors, then compare them with the requirements of a prospective GPU. Also verify the card’s length and thickness against the case clearance.
  • Case and layout: Look for standard components and connections, available mounting points, and enough room for the cooling and parts you may want. Proprietary connections or layouts can limit replacement choices.

Standard parts can make upgrades easier, but the model’s specifications—not its prebuilt label—are what matter. TechSpot’s 2021 comparison illustrates how particular OEM models can impose upgrade constraints; it is a historical example, not a guide to current prices or a recommendation for today’s models. ASUS ROG also discusses upgradeability and other considerations in its 2026 prebuilt desktop guide.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Choose a performance target. Compare systems intended for the same games and graphics settings rather than comparing price tags alone.
  2. Write down exact components. Record the CPU, GPU, memory configuration, storage, motherboard, power supply, cooling, and case for the prebuilt and the DIY list.
  3. Check the complete local total. Add operating-system costs, shipping, assembly, and applicable discounts; use prices observed for the same time and region.
  4. Value your time and support needs. Decide whether ready-to-use convenience and one system-level contact are worth any difference in price to you.
  5. Inspect the upgrade path. Confirm component support, free slots, power and connectors, physical clearance, and whether proprietary parts could restrict replacements.

For a component-by-component comparison, Intel’s guide to prebuilt and custom PCs and MSI’s gaming-PC guide offer additional manufacturer guidance. Neither substitutes for checking the exact system listing and current local prices.
