Solid-state batteries use pressure to keep solid materials in close contact so lithium ions can cross their interfaces during charging and discharging. There is no single pressure requirement: the right operating stack pressure depends on the cell’s chemistry, electrode design, loading, rate, temperature and mechanical fixture. Practical designs therefore aim not simply to apply pressure, but to maintain it evenly as the cell changes thickness while reducing the load the pack must carry.

Why solid-state batteries use pressure

A liquid electrolyte can wet and fill small gaps between electrode materials. A solid electrolyte cannot flow in the same way, so the cell depends on solid-to-solid interfaces. Applied pressure can increase the real contact area between particles and help preserve pathways for ions and electrons.

Those interfaces also have to cope with volume changes during cycling. If an electrode expands or contracts and loses contact with the electrolyte, voids can form. The resulting contact loss can increase polarization and reduce the amount of active material that contributes to capacity. Pressure is therefore both a mechanical design variable and an electrochemical operating condition.

The 2024 eScience review describes pressure as affecting solid-solid contact and ion/electron transport, as well as critical current density, lithium-ion diffusion kinetics and the management of volume-change stress. The benefit is not unlimited: the cell must be designed to handle the mechanical load and its distribution.

Fabrication pressure is not operating stack pressure

Two different pressure values are often discussed, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Pressure type When it is applied What it affects
Fabrication pressure During processes such as powder compaction, pelletizing, calendaring, densification or film formation The starting density, particle contacts and microstructure
Operating stack pressure On the assembled cell during charge and discharge Contact maintenance as materials expand and contract; it also affects fixture, packaging and scale-up requirements

A report of high pressure used to make a dense pellet does not by itself establish the pressure needed to operate the finished cell. For meaningful comparisons, papers and product specifications should identify both values separately.

How much pressure do solid-state batteries need?

There is no universal optimum across solid-electrolyte chemistries and cell architectures. Many laboratory experiments have used 10–70 MPa, while practical applications seek operating stack pressures below 1 MPa, according to Naik and colleagues’ 2025 cathode study. Those figures describe a gap between common experimental conditions and a practical target, not a pressure threshold that applies to every battery.

One 2025 demonstration shows that a cell can operate above that sub-1-MPa target and still report substantial performance. Lee, Jeon, Lee and colleagues reported a pouch cell operating at 5 MPa and 30 °C, with stack-level specific energy of 310 Wh kg−1 and energy density of 805 Wh L−1. These results are specific to that cell and test configuration; they do not establish a general operating pressure or energy figure for solid-state batteries.

The pressure dependence is also visible in Naik and colleagues’ modeled cathode comparison at 0.1C: cathode utilization was approximately 0.85 at 1 MPa and approximately 0.93 at 17 MPa. The result illustrates a trade-off in that modeled design, not a universal conversion between pressure and capacity.

Why lower pressure can reduce capacity

In the 2025 cathode study, lower pressure reduced contact between cathode active material and solid electrolyte. Reactions then concentrated at particle contact points, increasing kinetic overpotential and lowering cathode utilization compared with the higher-pressure case.

The study distinguishes two bottlenecks that can limit performance:

  • Limited lithium diffusion within active particles: lithium movement through the cathode material itself can be too slow.
  • Limited ion transport across the electrode: lithium ions can have difficulty moving through the electrode-scale network of active material and solid electrolyte.

These are different problems and may call for different design changes. Smaller active-material particles increase surface area and shorten lithium-diffusion paths; the study identifies this as a way to reduce pressure sensitivity at higher rates. Particle size is only one factor: active-material loading, electrolyte fraction, binder, conductive additive and contact uniformity also affect how much pressure a given cathode needs.

How researchers are reducing external pressure

Integrate layers and improve contact during manufacturing

Lee and colleagues’ 2025 dry co-rolling process integrated the cathode and solid-electrolyte layers. The reported integrated film had a 50 µm solid-electrolyte layer, a positive-electrode loading of 5 mAh cm−2 and 80 wt% active material. It retained more than 80% of its capacity after 500 cycles at 2 MPa. These film results are distinct from the pouch-cell energy figures reported at 5 MPa.

The approach matters because creating better interfaces and particle contacts during fabrication may reduce the amount of external force needed during operation. It does not eliminate the need to report operating pressure separately.

Optimize the electrode microstructure

Particle size, active-material loading, electrolyte fraction, binder and conductive additive all shape the contact network. Adjusting them can improve ion and electron pathways, but the useful balance depends on the chemistry and electrode design; simply maximizing active-material fraction or minimizing particle size is not established as a universal solution.

Use compliant layers or pressure-regulating fixtures

A cell fixture has to accommodate thickness changes without allowing contact to collapse or imposing poorly controlled force. Modeling indicates that higher stack pressure can increase capacity and reduce differences in state of charge, while also changing mechanical response and electronic conductivity.

Spring-based fixtures have been reported to stabilize pressure evolution at the hundred-kPa scale while accommodating cell-thickness changes. The 2024 Energy Storage Materials work cited for this approach reports retention of more than 98% of the highest stack pressure. That is a result for the reported fixture and cell, not a guarantee for other designs.

Pressure distribution matters as well as the average value. In anode-free cells, uneven pressure can affect lithium plating and stripping at the solid-electrolyte/current-collector interface. Elastomeric interlayers are being studied to spread pressure more evenly; their presence alone should not be taken as proof that a cell has uniform pressure.

How to assess a low-pressure battery claim

A pressure number without its test conditions is difficult to interpret. When comparing studies or evaluating a design, look for the following details:

  • Which pressure is reported: fabrication pressure, operating stack pressure, or both.
  • Cell design: electrolyte and electrode chemistry, cathode loading, areal capacity and whether the anode is lithium metal, composite or anode-free.
  • Operating conditions: current rate and temperature, along with whether pressure is held constant or allowed to vary during cycling.
  • Mechanical setup: fixture geometry, pressure distribution and how the fixture accommodates cell-thickness change.
  • Performance evidence: capacity retention, rate capability, cycle count and energy density, with a clear indication of whether energy figures include the pressure-management hardware.

Claims made at tens of MPa are laboratory demonstrations unless the cell architecture also explains how that load will be provided and managed in a practical pack. A lower average MPa value is not automatically better if the pressure is uneven or decays as the cell cycles. Practical comparisons need to weigh pressure requirement against performance, fixture mass, manufacturability and safety.

What the evidence establishes—and what it does not

Recent studies show both sides of the engineering problem: pressure can improve contact and cathode utilization, while integrated films, microstructure control and compliant fixtures offer ways to lower or regulate the external load. The 2025 co-rolling results are a specific low-pressure demonstration, not evidence that all solid-state batteries already operate below 1 MPa.

No single optimum pressure is established for every chemistry and architecture. The requirement varies with cathode microstructure, electrolyte mechanics, loading, current rate, anode design, pressure uniformity and fixture compliance. A useful claim therefore gives the pressure together with the cell design and operating conditions, rather than presenting one MPa figure as a general specification.
