To target Chrome, Edge, or Firefox specifically, start that browser’s executable and pass the URL as an argument; the executable name or path must work on your computer.
Open a URL in the default browser
In PowerShell on Windows, run:
Start-Process 'https://example.com'Start-Process can open a non-executable item with its associated application. Windows routes http: and https: links to the browser configured as the default, so this command does not guarantee Chrome, Edge, or Firefox unless that browser is your default. See Microsoft’s PowerShell 7.5 Start-Process documentation and Windows URI launch guidance.
Open a URL in a specific browser
Start the browser process and supply the URL. These examples use executable names; Windows must be able to resolve the name. If it cannot, substitute the full path to the browser executable installed on your computer.

Microsoft documents -FilePath and -ArgumentList for starting a process. Mozilla’s Firefox command-line documentation describes passing a URL to Firefox, including the -url option. The browser examples above use the general process-launch pattern; executable names and installation locations can differ between systems.

Open a new Firefox tab or window
Firefox documents these URL options:
- New tab:
Start-Process -FilePath 'firefox.exe' -ArgumentList '--new-tab https://example.com' - New window:
Start-Process -FilePath 'firefox.exe' -ArgumentList '--new-window https://example.com'
The commands assume the executable can be found. Firefox’s documented options are listed in its command-line reference; what happens when an existing Firefox process is running can depend on the local installation and process state.
Choose the right approach
- Use the default-browser command when you want Windows to honor the user’s configured HTTP(S) browser.
- Launch an executable directly when you want to request a particular installed browser and can identify its executable.
- Use browser-specific options only where that browser documents them; the tab and window examples above are for Firefox.
Troubleshoot a command that does not open the page
PowerShell cannot find the browser
If an executable name such as firefox.exe is not recognized, use the actual executable path for the installation on that computer. Do not assume a single path applies to all Windows installations.

The URL opens in a different browser
That is expected when using Start-Process 'https://example.com': Windows chooses the configured default handler. To request another browser, launch its executable explicitly.
The command includes arguments with spaces or quotes
PowerShell’s -ArgumentList joins array elements with spaces. Microsoft recommends using a single argument-list string and including any required quote characters when arguments need quoting. See the Start-Process reference for the parameter details.

PowerShell and the Windows command prompt use different syntax
In PowerShell, use Start-Process. Microsoft’s example start "Bing" "https://www.bing.com" is for cmd.exe, not a PowerShell Start-Process command. Microsoft’s start command reference documents that command-interpreter example.
These Windows URI and browser-association behaviors should not be treated as cross-platform guarantees: PowerShell also runs on other operating systems, where process launching and URL associations differ.
