A power bank’s mAh describes charge at a stated battery voltage, Wh describes stored energy, and W describes how quickly it can deliver power. For a flight, carry it in the cabin—not checked baggage—and check the rules of every airline operating your trip. In the U.S., the FAA’s general guidance allows some spare batteries above 100Wh with airline approval, but other rules and carrier policies can be stricter. This guide explains how to read the numbers, choose compatible charging gear, and avoid treating one airline’s limit as universal.

What do mAh, Wh, and W mean on a power bank?

mAh is a measure of electric charge, Wh is stored energy, and W is power. They answer different questions: mAh is useful when the battery voltage is known, Wh helps compare energy and assess flight limits, and W indicates the rate of power delivery or intake.

  • mAh (milliamp-hours): A charge rating tied to a particular voltage. It is not a direct promise of how much charge will reach a phone.
  • Wh (watt-hours): Energy stored in the battery. This is the key capacity figure in airline battery rules.
  • W (watts): Power. A high output-wattage rating may help charge a compatible device faster, but it does not mean the bank stores that many watt-hours.

For example, a manufacturer’s Anker Nano listing gives the same bank a 10,000mAh / 36Wh capacity rating and advertises up to 45W output. Those figures are not interchangeable: the 45W describes output power, not stored energy. See the manufacturer’s product FAQ.

How do I convert mAh to Wh?

Use the battery’s printed nominal voltage: Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × volts. Do not substitute the USB output voltage for the battery voltage. The FAA directs travelers to use volts and amp-hours when calculating watt-hours; its battery guidance explains the calculation.

Capacity at a stated 3.7V Calculated energy
10,000mAh 37Wh
20,000mAh 74Wh
30,000mAh 111Wh

These are arithmetic examples, not universal ratings for every bank with that mAh figure. A real product’s marked Wh value takes precedence over an estimate based on an assumed voltage. For instance, the cited Anker Nano is marked 36Wh, not the 37Wh a simple calculation at 3.7V would produce. Do not infer that every power bank below a particular mAh capacity is under the 100Wh airline threshold: check its label.

Why doesn’t my 10,000mAh power bank charge my phone twice?

Because the bank’s cell capacity is not all delivered to the phone. Voltage conversion and the phone’s own charging and battery systems affect how much usable energy reaches it, and the phone may also be in use while charging.

A better rough comparison is the bank’s Wh against the phone battery’s Wh, followed by an allowance for conversion losses and use—not bank mAh divided by phone mAh. Anker illustrates one conversion stage at approximately 82%, but that is a manufacturer example, not a universal efficiency figure or a guarantee for a particular combination. Its capacity explanation also discusses the difference between cell-level and output capacity. Compare mAh figures only when they refer to the same voltage; Wh is the more useful common energy unit.

How much wattage do I need to charge a phone, tablet, or laptop?

Match the power bank to the device’s supported charging protocol and power needs. There is no single wattage that is right for every phone or laptop: check the device’s specifications, then compare them with the bank’s rating for the particular port you plan to use.

  1. Find the device’s charging requirements. Look for its supported USB Power Delivery (USB PD) or other charging mode and the power it can accept.
  2. Check the output for one port. A bank’s headline or combined-output number may not be available from each port individually. Confirm the maximum output and supported voltage/protocol on the specific USB-C or USB-A port.
  3. Check shared-port behavior. A bank may reduce or redistribute output when two or more devices are connected. Read the product’s port-sharing specifications.
  4. Check the cable. The cable’s power rating and capabilities must also suit the bank and device.
  5. Check input separately. The bank’s input rating determines how it can be refilled; its output rating alone does not tell you how quickly it recharges.

USB PD lets a compatible device request an appropriate level of power; it does not force every device to take the bank’s maximum. The USB Implementers Forum’s USB Power Delivery information describes the standard. A device may accept less power than a bank can offer, and charging can slow as the battery-management system adjusts to the battery’s charge level or temperature.

Can a 65W power bank charge my laptop?

Possibly, if the laptop accepts a compatible charging protocol and power level from that bank’s port. Check the laptop’s requirements and the bank’s per-port output, including its supported voltage profiles; a USB-C connector alone does not establish compatibility.

Also consider what happens when another device is connected. In the manufacturer’s specifications for the Anker Nano cited above, using two ports changes the stated distribution to a maximum of 15W on one port and 7.5W on the other, rather than 45W to each device. That is a model-specific example, not a rule for all power banks. A large combined-output figure is not a substitute for checking the single-port output available to the laptop.

Does any USB-C cable support maximum charging speed?

No. USB-C identifies the connector shape; it does not by itself guarantee USB PD support or a particular charging rate. The bank, cable, and receiving device all need to support a compatible combination.

USB-IF’s cable guidance says that cables do not all have the same capabilities and describes certified cable markings for 60W and 240W. Check the cable’s rating rather than assuming it can carry any power the bank advertises. A 240W-rated cable cannot make a 45W bank supply more than its own maximum. USB-IF lists a USB Power Delivery specification dated September 14, 2026, so older overview documents should not be presented as the latest revision.

How quickly will a power bank recharge?

Look at its input wattage and the charger and cable used to refill it. A bank advertised with high output may still take longer to recharge if its input is lower, or if the wall charger cannot supply the required power.

As a product-specific example, Anker estimates approximately 2 hours 10 minutes to refill its cited Nano using a charger rated at 30W or higher at 25°C. That is the manufacturer’s estimate for that model and stated conditions, not a general recharge time for power banks. Other banks, adapters, cables, and conditions can differ. See the product FAQ for its stated example.

Can I bring a 20,000mAh power bank on a plane?

Often, but mAh alone cannot establish that it meets a flight’s limit. At an explicitly stated nominal 3.7V, 20,000mAh calculates to 74Wh; use the actual bank’s printed Wh rating and check the rules for your route and operating carriers.

Carry power banks in the cabin, never in checked baggage. The FAA says spare lithium batteries—including power banks and portable chargers—must be carried on and cannot be checked. If your carry-on is taken at the gate, remove the power bank and keep it with you. Protect its terminals from short circuits and the unit from damage. The FAA’s lithium battery guidance and passenger FAQ provide U.S. guidance.

Is the airline limit 100W or 100Wh?

For battery capacity, the relevant unit is Wh, not W. The U.S. FAA page, updated October 2, 2026, describes an ordinary limit of 100Wh and says up to two spare lithium-ion batteries rated 101–160Wh may be carried with airline approval under its guidance. That does not mean a 160Wh power bank is accepted on every airline or itinerary.

The rules are not uniform across all authorities and carriers. IATA’s March 31, 2026 operator table marks power banks over 100Wh and up to 160Wh as forbidden, while its accompanying text discusses an operator-approval provision and a transition. IATA notes that local adoption and enforcement can differ and says the approval provision will not be carried into its January 1, 2027 edition. American Airlines’ current portable-charger section sets a maximum of 100Wh per charger. These are distinct texts and policies, not a single universal threshold. Before travel, check each operating airline and relevant jurisdiction; a label or advertisement saying “airline approved” is not a substitute.

How many power banks can I take on a flight?

Check the carrier’s rule rather than treating the FAA’s general guidance for spare batteries as a universal allowance for power banks. IATA’s March 2026 guidance says no more than two power banks per person, and American Airlines also specifies two portable chargers per passenger. The FAA’s general U.S. guidance says there is no quantity limit for most under-100Wh batteries carried for personal use, but warns that airlines may be stricter. That general battery statement should not be read as permission to carry unlimited power banks on every flight.

Can I use or recharge a power bank during a flight?

Follow the operating airline’s instructions. IATA’s addendum says a power bank must not be recharged onboard and should not be used to recharge a portable electronic device onboard; the first is stated as a prohibition and the second as a recommendation. American Airlines says not to refill portable chargers using seat power and instructs passengers to keep them accessible rather than in overhead bins or enclosed spaces. Crew instructions and carrier policies control on the day.

What should I check before buying a power bank?

Start with the device you need to charge and how you will travel with the bank. Compare the printed Wh for flight fit, the output available on one port, supported charging protocols, input for refilling, cable rating, shared-port behavior, and clear labeling. If flying, confirm the operating carrier’s limit and quantity rule before buying or packing it.

Manufacturer specifications can help you compare, but they are not independent performance tests or guarantees of airline acceptance. For example, Anker describes a Prime 26K bank as 99.75Wh, with 300W total output and up to 140W from one USB-C port. Those are the manufacturer’s figures, and the actual unit’s Wh marking and carrier rules still matter. A clearly marked bank at or below 100Wh is generally the simpler starting point for air travel, but verify the rules for your itinerary. See the manufacturer’s travel article for its stated product specifications.

Do not travel with a swollen, damaged, or recalled bank that could spark or generate dangerous heat. The FAA warns against carrying such a battery unless it has been removed or otherwise made safe; a protective pouch does not make an unsafe battery safe. Check the FAA’s lithium battery safety guidance if a battery is damaged or recalled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I carry a power bank if its label does not show watt-hours?

Do not assume its capacity from the mAh figure alone: the calculation needs the marked nominal battery voltage too. If you cannot verify the bank’s Wh rating, ask the operating airline what documentation it will accept before traveling rather than guessing.

Should I buy a power bank rated exactly 100Wh for a trip?

There is no need to target the limit; a clearly labeled bank below it may simplify checks, while an exact limit still leaves carrier and itinerary rules to verify. Treat the printed Wh rating and the airline’s current policy as decisive, not a seller’s broad “airline approved” claim.

Does a power bank’s wattage tell me how long it will run my device?

No. Wattage describes power delivery at a point in time, not the total energy stored. For a rough energy comparison, use Wh for both the power bank and the device battery, while remembering that conversion losses and active device use reduce the energy that reaches the device.
