A portable touchscreen monitor is the better fit if you need to move the display between desks or use it with multiple compatible devices. A case-mounted touchscreen is better for a stationary desktop when you want a compact, always-visible screen for system information, chat, or controls. The right choice depends on where it will sit, what you will connect, and how you will power and mount it.
What’s the difference?
Both are auxiliary displays, but they are designed for different placements. A portable touchscreen is a separate screen intended to be repositioned. A case-mounted touchscreen is meant to stay with a desktop PC, mounted on or inside the case, on a nearby surface, or on a compatible arm.
Portable touchscreen monitors
Portable models typically use a cover, foldable case, or built-in stand so you can set them up beside a laptop or another compatible host. For example, the ASUS ZenScreen Touch MB16AMT is a 15.6-inch-viewable Full HD IPS display with 10-point touch, USB-C and micro-HDMI, a built-in battery, and a foldable case that serves as a stand. The ViewSonic TD1655 is a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS portable touchscreen with USB-C, mini-HDMI, a protective cover, and a built-in stand.
Case-mounted touchscreens
A case-mounted screen is intended to remain part of a desktop setup. CORSAIR’s XENEON EDGE is a 14.5-inch, 2560×720 touchscreen. It can attach magnetically inside a case or to a suitable metal surface such as a PSU shroud, sit on its detachable desktop stand, or attach to an AV arm using its ¼-20-inch mounting points. CORSAIR describes it as an auxiliary display, not a standalone screen: it needs video input from a PC, laptop, or another device with HDMI 2.0 or USB-C DP Alt Mode.

These are use-case distinctions based on manufacturers’ described form factors and features, not a head-to-head performance ranking. Neither category is universally better.
Check video, touch, and power before buying
A video connection does not necessarily carry touch data, and not every USB-C port supports video. Confirm the requirements for both the display and the computer or other host. With the XENEON EDGE, USB-C DP Alt Mode can carry video; if you use HDMI 2.0 for video, CORSAIR says a separate USB connection is needed for touch. Also check whether your chosen connection requires separate power.

For the MB16AMT, ASUS lists USB-C and micro-HDMI connectivity and a 7800 mAh built-in battery. Those specifications illustrate why it is worth checking each model’s connection and power arrangements rather than assuming all portable displays work the same way.
- Verify that the host has a compatible video output for the display’s input.
- Check whether touch works over the video connection or requires a separate USB cable.
- Confirm how the display receives power, including whether host power is sufficient.
- Measure the intended mounting space and check that the stand, magnets, or arm attachment suit your setup.
Choose based on where and how you’ll use it
Choose portable if the screen needs to move
Pick a portable touchscreen if you expect to carry it, change desks, or connect it to more than one compatible device. The stand or cover makes placement flexible, but check the particular model’s size, connectivity, touch path, and power options.

Choose case-mounted if the PC stays put
Pick a case-mounted auxiliary display if your PC is stationary and you have a specific use for a small screen that stays visible—such as glancing at system information, keeping chat in view, or accessing controls. Make sure the case or nearby surface can accommodate the display and that its mounting method fits.
Neither is the right choice if you expect a standalone computer
A touchscreen monitor is a display, not a complete computer. CORSAIR’s product FAQ answers whether the XENEON EDGE works by itself: “No, it’s designed as an auxiliary display.” It requires a video input from a PC, laptop, or a device with HDMI 2.0 or USB-C DP Alt Mode.

Are HDMI or DisplayPort compatible with touch?
They can carry the picture, but touch may need a separate data connection. For the XENEON EDGE, HDMI 2.0 carries video while a separate USB connection is required for touch. For other models, confirm the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact video input and touch connection; do not assume that plugging in HDMI or DisplayPort alone will make touch work.
