For a humid, enclosed room, a portable air conditioner is usually the better choice. It uses refrigeration to cool indoor air and sends heat outside through an exhaust. An evaporative cooler relies on water evaporating into the air, so it adds moisture—and high humidity limits how much more evaporation can cool the space. Evaporative cooling is better suited to dry conditions and well-ventilated areas.

Why humidity changes the comparison

The appliances cool in different ways. A direct evaporative cooler draws air across wet media. Water evaporates, absorbing heat, but the resulting water vapor stays in the air unless ventilation carries it away. A portable AC uses refrigeration to condition indoor air and transfers heat toward an outdoor exhaust path. The U.S. Department of Energy describes a portable AC in ordinary terms as a movable unit that delivers cooled, conditioned air to an enclosed space; its technical definition is on the DOE portable air conditioner page.

Because humid air is already holding more moisture, an evaporative cooler has less opportunity to add water through evaporation and produce cooling. Honeywell says evaporative coolers work best at relative humidity of about 60% or lower, while DeLonghi recommends its evaporative cooler for areas where relative humidity does not reach 50–60%. These are manufacturers’ general suitability guidelines, not universal engineering cutoffs. Australia’s government household guidance likewise says evaporative systems are less effective on humid days.

Which appliance fits your space?

Factor Portable AC Evaporative cooler
Humid, enclosed room Generally the better fit: it cools by refrigeration and exhausts heat outdoors. Usually a poor fit: humidity limits evaporation, and the cooler adds moisture.
Dry weather Can still cool; operating cost depends on the specific model and conditions. More favorable for evaporation, particularly in dry air.
Ventilation Needs a suitable route to exhaust heat outside. Needs airflow, ideally cross-ventilation, to let added moisture escape.
Cooling target Can deliver conditioned air into an enclosed space; suitable capacity depends on the unit and room. Best treated as ventilated spot cooling; portable units may be less effective at cooling a whole room.
Setup and care Check hose and window fit. Maintenance varies by model. Needs water and care of its wet media, including cleaning and replacement when required.

When an evaporative cooler can still make sense

Consider one when the air is dry and you can keep air moving through the space. Honeywell recommends cross-ventilation and airflow to the outside: an open window or another suitable outlet helps remove the moisture the cooler adds. This makes it more plausible for a ventilated room, patio-like area, or spot cooling than for a closed room that needs sustained cooling.

Portable evaporative coolers should not be assumed to perform like room air conditioners. Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says portable evaporative coolers are less effective at cooling a room; if they recirculate air while adding humidity without airflow outside, they may warm the room over time. The department’s household guidance also reports water use of up to 25 litres per hour for evaporative cooling systems discussed there; that figure varies by system and is not a portable-AC comparison.

What to check before choosing a portable AC

  1. Confirm the exhaust route. A single-duct portable AC sends condenser exhaust outdoors through a duct attached to an adjustable window bracket. The DOE explains the arrangement in its portable AC guidance.
  2. Verify the window and kit fit. Check that the supplied bracket or compatible vent kit can be installed in your specific window and that the hose can reach without blocking the intended airflow. Compatibility is model- and window-dependent.
  3. Match the unit to the room. Cooling capacity and room suitability depend on the chosen model and the space. Category-level guidance cannot promise a particular temperature reduction; consult current product documentation for the room and installation requirements.

What to check before choosing an evaporative cooler

  • Check local humidity and typical conditions. Manufacturer guidance around 50–60% relative humidity is a useful suitability signal, not a hard pass/fail threshold.
  • Make sure the space can be ventilated. Plan how air—and excess moisture—will leave. If the room must stay sealed, an evaporative cooler is unlikely to be the better choice.
  • Account for water and wet-media care. Honeywell advises draining and cleaning the unit and replacing media according to use and condition. Replacement media must match the specific cooler; fit is not universal.

Energy-use claims need the right comparison

The DOE infographic says evaporative coolers use about one-quarter of the energy of a central air conditioner. That comparison is specifically with central AC, not portable AC, so it does not establish that a portable evaporative cooler will use one-quarter the energy of a portable air conditioner. A fair running-cost comparison needs the specific models, their power use, local electricity rates, room conditions, and hours of operation.

How to decide

  • Choose a portable AC for a humid, enclosed room if you can install its outdoor exhaust properly.
  • Consider an evaporative cooler for dry conditions and a space where cross-ventilation is practical, especially when you want localized cooling.
  • Reconsider either choice if the installation constraints or room conditions do not match the appliance: the AC needs an exhaust path, while the evaporative cooler needs dry air and a way for moisture to escape.
