A snooker cue typically has a narrower tip than an American pool cue, but cue dimensions are conventions, not universal rules. Choose by the game you play: a cue designed for American pool is generally the better fit for American pool, while snooker and English pool have different equipment needs.
How snooker and American pool cues compare
The most useful first distinction is which kind of pool you mean. American pool and English pool use different equipment, so “pool cue” does not describe one universal specification.
| Feature | Snooker cue | American pool cue | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical tip diameter | 9–10 mm, according to World Cue Sports | 11.2–13 mm, according to World Cue Sports | These are typical guide ranges, not mandatory rule specifications. |
| Typical length and weight | About 58 in and 16.5–20 oz, according to World Cue Sports | About 58.5 in and 18–21 oz, according to the secondary comparison by WPA Pool | Approximate ranges from different sources; they overlap and are not hard specifications. |
| Equipment fit | Designed for snooker’s smaller balls and long table | Designed for American pool’s larger, heavier balls | English pool is a separate case; American pool dimensions should not be applied to every pool game. |
| Common joint format | 3/4 joint cues are popular | Two-piece cues are common | Format often reflects portability and player preference, not a rule requirement. |
The specialist guide also describes a different typical tip range for English pool, so it is better to treat it as its own equipment category rather than a midpoint between snooker and American pool. The tip figures above describe common designs, not a guarantee that one cue will suit every player.
What the snooker rules require
The WPBSA’s official Rules of Snooker and English Billiards page identifies the 2024–25 rulebook as released in September 2024 and says it provides the current version. The rulebook sets a broad cue baseline: “A cue shall be not less than 3 ft (914 mm) in length and shall show no change from the traditional tapered shape and form, with a tip, used to strike the cue-ball, secured to the thinner end.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That requirement does not set a 9–10 mm tip diameter. The narrower range is a typical market convention described by equipment guides, not a WPBSA rule. For organized pool competition, check the rules for the specific governing body and game rather than assuming snooker rules apply.
Can you use a snooker cue for pool?
Sometimes, particularly for English pool: a specialist cue guide says a snooker cue can work for that game. It is generally a poorer choice for regular American pool. American pool balls are larger and heavier, and the guide warns that a snooker cue may feel underpowered or experience extra strain with them.

Interchangeability also depends on the player. Tip size, balance and feel affect how a cue suits your stroke, but the available sources do not establish that a smaller tip automatically gives every player better accuracy or spin. Treat specifications as a starting point and, when possible, choose a cue that feels comfortable for the game you actually play.
Which cue should you choose?
- Mostly play snooker: Choose a snooker cue suited to your preferred balance and feel.
- Mostly play American pool: Choose a purpose-made American pool cue rather than relying on a snooker cue as a substitute.
- Mostly play English pool: Compare cues intended for English pool as well as snooker cues; the specialist guide says a snooker cue can sometimes be used.
Before buying, confirm the game and rules you need to play, then compare the cue’s tip, balance, feel, joint and ease of transport. No single tip diameter or weight is a universal best choice.

One-piece, two-piece and 3/4 cues
Construction format is a practical choice separate from game fit. According to the specialist buying guide, one-piece cues prioritize continuity and traditional feel; two-piece cues are easy to carry and common in American pool; and 3/4 cues are popular in snooker and English pool as a compromise between portability and a longer continuous section. Choose the format that works with how you travel and store your cue.
