The complete catalyst combined the modified MXene with reduced titanium dioxide (RT) and copper nanoparticles, and the team reported producing 18.1 μmol of methane per gram—about 200 times the output of reduced TiO₂ alone.
How the polymer modification fits into the catalyst
MXene can support electron transfer in photocatalysis, but its vulnerability to water and light poses a stability challenge in water-containing applications. The team’s approach was to bond an organic polymer to the MXene surface, creating what the report calls surface-modified MXene, or f-MXene.
The polymer-modified MXene was one part of a three-component catalyst, alongside reduced titanium dioxide and copper nanoparticles. In the team’s explanation, f-MXene assists electron transfer, while copper promotes the reaction that converts carbon dioxide into methane. The polymer modification is intended to help protect the MXene; it is not, by itself, the methane-producing catalyst.
The work was led by Professor Su-Il In of DGIST, with collaborating teams led by Professor Insik In of Korea National University of Transportation, Professor Taegyeong Lee of Hanyang University, and Professor Soorathep Kheawhom of Chulalongkorn University. What the methane result means
The team reported a methane output of 18.1 μmol/g for the combined catalyst. The report says this was approximately 200 times the performance of reduced TiO₂ alone. That multiplier applies to this specific comparison; it does not establish a 200-fold advantage over photocatalysts generally.
The result is a laboratory research finding, not evidence that the catalyst is commercially ready or an industrial carbon-conversion solution. The accessible account does not establish the experimental conditions behind the figure, methane selectivity, measurement uncertainty, or catalyst durability over time. Those details matter for assessing how the result might compare across experiments or translate beyond the laboratory.

What remains unverified
The news account identifies an Advanced Energy Materials paper titled “Surface-Functionalized MXene for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2Reduction” and gives the DOI 10.1002/aenm.71560. The DOI landing page was not accessible for verification, so the underlying methods and full publication metadata could not be confirmed from that page. The reported output and catalyst description should therefore be read as findings attributed to the research team in the news account, not as independently verified or replicated results.
