There are nine numbered Pokémon generations, from Generation I in Kanto to Generation IX in Paldea. Each has a familiar starting choice—usually one Grass-, Fire-, or Water-type partner—but a different region and set of game features. The comparison below covers the standard starter trios, the region for each generation, and notable details documented for its games.

Pokémon generations compared: starters, regions, and features

The starter trios below are a reference collation of the standard mainline game rosters, not a single table published by The Pokémon Company. Official materials describe the recurring Grass/Fire/Water pattern and document the feature examples noted here.

Generation Region First-partner trio Notable comparison point
I Kanto Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle The original numbered-era region. It was revisited in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, which use a Pokémon GO-influenced catching mechanic and offer Pikachu or Eevee as the partner choice. Official Let’s Go overview
II Johto Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile Gold and Silver added 100 Pokémon, held items, a real-time clock and events, Pokémon genders, and the Steel and Dark types. Official Gold and Silver retrospective

What are the Pokémon generations?

A generation is a numbered game-era grouping, associated with a mainline debut and its region. The sequence runs from Kanto (I), Johto (II), Hoenn (III), Sinnoh (IV), Unova (V), Kalos (VI), Alola (VII), and Galar (VIII) to Paldea (IX). The Pokémon Company’s 2023 region-map article presents all nine regions together. See the official region-map article.

A return to an earlier region does not, by itself, create a new numbered generation. For example, the two Let’s Go games revisit Kanto, while retaining their distinct partner choices and catching approach. Remakes, enhanced editions, and revisits belong to the history of the region and games; they are not automatically the next generation.

How do the starter choices compare?

The familiar choice is one Grass-, Fire-, or Water-type first partner. That pattern gives the generations an easy point of comparison, but it does not establish that one trio is objectively stronger or that a particular choice makes a game easier. The right pick depends on which Pokémon a player likes and wants on their team.

The partner setup can differ from the standard trio: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! center the choice on Pikachu or Eevee. The official Pokémon Parents overview describes the broader starter-type pattern, while the official Let’s Go page documents those games’ partner and catching differences. Which features mark the generations?

Generation II: Johto’s expanded systems

The official retrospective for Gold and Silver highlights several additions: 100 Pokémon, held items, Pokémon genders, and the Steel and Dark types. It also describes an internal clock tied to real-time events. These are documented additions from those games, not a claim that every later game uses each system in the same way. The Pokémon Company International’s Gold and Silver page.

Generation III: Hoenn’s battles and contests

Ruby and Sapphire introduced double battles, Abilities, Natures, and Contests, according to the official game page. A company retrospective specifically identifies Hoenn as the first region to offer Pokémon Contests. Ruby and Sapphire page · Hoenn retrospective.

Other regions: compare geography without forcing a signature mechanic

For Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, and Alola, the cited official region-map material offers concrete landmarks and activities rather than a single feature that should define each whole generation. Sinnoh’s Mount Coronet, Unova’s N’s Castle, Kalos’s Lumiose City, and Alola’s trials are useful ways to distinguish their settings. Official region-map article.

Does a return to a region count as a new generation?

No. The numbered sequence is not simply a list of every game release or every region revisit. Kanto’s appearance in Let’s Go is a return to a region introduced in Generation I, not a tenth numbered generation. Similarly, remakes and enhanced editions do not change the number of the generation they revisit.

The Pokémon Evolutions press description listed eight regions through Galar in 2021; The Pokémon Company’s 2023 map article later included Paldea. Those materials reflect different publication dates, not conflicting counts of the numbered generations. Pokémon Evolutions press material · 2023 region-map article.

Hisui, the setting associated with Pokémon Legends: Arceus, is outside this nine-generation comparison. It should not be silently added as Generation X: this article compares the nine numbered mainline generations and their regions.
