Point Nemo is a remote patch of the South Pacific used as a target region for controlled reentries of some large, retired spacecraft. The nickname “spacecraft cemetery” can mislead: much of a spacecraft may burn up in the atmosphere, and only debris that survives is directed toward the ocean. The practice helps reduce hazards in orbit and on the ground, but it does not mean the ocean is lifeless or that the environmental effects are fully known.

Where is Point Nemo?

Point Nemo lies at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W in the South Pacific. NOAA identifies it as the ocean location farthest from land: it is about 2,688 kilometers from the nearest land. That isolation makes the surrounding region a practical target for controlled reentries intended to keep surviving debris away from populated areas. NOAA explains Point Nemo’s location and distance from land.

“Point” Nemo is a geographic reference, not a marked site containing a known collection of spacecraft. The “satellite graveyard” or “spacecraft cemetery” refers to a broad remote disposal region, not a precisely mapped pile of intact vehicles.

Why send retired spacecraft back to Earth?

Leaving an unusable spacecraft in orbit can put functioning satellites and crewed vehicles at risk of collision. A collision can create more fragments, which in turn become additional hazards—a cascading problem often called the Kessler Effect. NASA describes this orbital-debris concern in its explanation of what happens to old satellites.

For an object too large to burn up completely, a controlled reentry can reduce the chance that surviving pieces will fall over populated areas. ESA space debris analyst Stijn Lemmens described the alternative of leaving a spacecraft circulating indefinitely as “not a solution,” in Live Science’s 2023 report on Point Nemo.

What happens to old satellites when they die?

There is no single disposal route. The choice depends in part on a spacecraft’s orbit and size, and on whether parts are expected to survive reentry. NASA summarizes the main pathways as follows:

Disposal path Typical use What happens
Atmospheric reentry Many smaller satellites in low Earth orbit The satellite is slowed so it falls out of orbit and burns up in the atmosphere.
Remote-ocean reentry Large objects with debris likely to survive The reentry is controlled toward an unpopulated ocean region; surviving fragments may reach the water.
Graveyard orbit Some spacecraft in higher orbits The retired object is moved farther from Earth rather than brought down to the ocean.

These are different meanings of “graveyard”: a graveyard orbit is still in space, while the Point Nemo region is a target for controlled reentry. NASA’s Space Place explanation of satellite disposal describes the distinctions.

Does a spacecraft arrive intact at the ocean floor?

No. A planned ocean reentry does not mean the whole spacecraft survives the atmosphere or reaches the seafloor as one piece. Smaller satellites can burn up during reentry; larger objects may shed fragments, with the surviving debris directed toward a remote ocean footprint. The target is an area, not a promise that every piece will land at one exact point.

NASA’s plan for the International Space Station (ISS) describes targeting an unpopulated ocean region during controlled deorbit. Its 2023 planning notice also describes deorbit as a shared responsibility among the station’s five partner agencies.

How the ISS deorbit plan is taking shape

NASA’s FY 2027 budget request places the ISS’s planned end of operational life in 2030 and describes controlled deorbit to an uninhabited ocean region. These are planning milestones, not guaranteed dates; schedules can change.

Development contract SpaceX received the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle development contract in June 2024. NASA described its potential value at award as $843 million; that figure is not the final cost or the total cost of deorbiting the ISS. NASA’s award announcement
Cost and schedule baselines Approved in February 2026, according to NASA’s FY 2027 budget request.
Vehicle delivery Scheduled for late 2028, according to NASA’s FY 2027 budget request.
ISS operational endpoint Planned for 2030, according to NASA’s FY 2027 budget request.

The launch service for the vehicle is to be procured separately. The budget request is NASA’s newer published schedule context; older reporting should not be treated as the current timetable.

What is known about the environmental impact?

Point Nemo’s remoteness does not establish that it is ecologically empty. Research on the South Pacific Gyre describes microbial communities, and reporting has characterized the region as having low biomass. Those findings describe environmental conditions; they do not measure the effects of spacecraft debris on the Point Nemo seafloor.

  • HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.

Atmospheric reentry is a separate environmental question. A peer-reviewed PNAS study examined metals from spacecraft reentry in stratospheric aerosol particles. That work raises questions about what reentry adds to the atmosphere, but does not by itself establish a specific health or climate effect. Nor do the sources cited here quantify a local ecological impact from debris at Point Nemo.
